It?s something to ponder while lounging around out there at the Immersed in Ink Tattoo & Arts Festival in Beaumont this weekend and getting your hide tattooed.
Bacteria! Something called nontuberculous Mycobacteria. Sounds terrible, huh? Maybe terminal.
And it?s not from dirty needles and careless tattoo artists. It?s lurking in the ink. There have been several outbreaks of these noxious infections in the last year. Some of these bacteria can cause lung disease, joint infection, eye problems and other organ infections They can be hard for the doc to diagnose and require long term treatment.
Worse still the inks are contaminated in all kinds of different ways: bad ingredients, the manufacturing process, unhygienic practices and dirty water used to dilute the inks.
It?s enough to make someone fore go the needles and stick with the circus sideshows of human suspension, burlesque acts, Ms. Tattoo pageants and extreme midget brawling instead.
But if you get that ?tat? you?ve always wanted and end up with what looks like a red rash on your new skin art in a few weeks don?t assume it?s just an allergic reaction.
