Sony Xperia TX video preview

Sony's IFA 2012 announcements were primarily about the bigger picture, both in terms of the company's One Sony strategy and in the literal sense that the Japanese giant showed off its first 84-inch 4K TV. Still, almost out of habit, Sony also refreshed its Android smartphone lineup with a trio of new handsets: the Xperia T / TX, the Xperia V and the Xperia J.

The distinction between the two versions of the flagship T device is actually bigger than Sony would have you believe: The Germany-only Xperia T has a dual-core Qualcomm processor, clocked at 1.5GHz, is thicker than the Europe-wide Xperia TX, positions the power button differently, and has a slightly less unified design. The specs are otherwise a total match, including the 4.6-inch 1280 x 720 display, 13-megapixel Exmor R camera, and Android 4.0 OS.

Solidly built and solidly specced, but not really ruffling any feathers of excitement

Both handsets take inspiration from Sony's successful Xperia Arc smartphone of 2011, including the subtle concave curve of the back (now even subtler), though they upgrade the back cover with a new soft-touch matte surface that feels a lot better in the hand than the glossy plastic of the Arc. Alas, Sony couldn't restrain itself from injecting glossy sheen entirely, and there's a reflective strip wrapping around the sides of the Xperia TX, framing the display in an unnecessary sliver of glitz.

Overall, the Xperia TX feels solidly built and solidly specced, but it's not really ruffling any feathers of excitement. Then again, unlike more ambitious launches from Samsung and LG recently, the TX and its T sibling will be on sale within the next couple of weeks. They'll be joined then by the Xperia V and Xperia J, with the V being essentially a T series phone shrunken to 4.3 inches and enhanced with water resistance, while the J aims for the budget-minded with a much more trimmed-down spec sheet.

Sheriff: Drunk causes death of 70,000 chickens

Joshua D. Shelton, 21, Delmar, Md., is accused of turning off power to three chicken houses, resulting in the deaths of 70,000 chickens.

A man wandering around a Delmar, Md., poultry farm in a drunken stupor turned off the power to three chicken houses, causing the deaths of nearly 70,000 chickens, sheriff?s officials said.

The property owner who made the grisly discovery found the man, identified as Joshua D. Shelton, 21, of Delmar, Md., passed out on the floor of the power control shed, wearing only a T-shirt and boxer shorts.

?This subject was also lying in a pool of his own urine. A strong odor of alcohol was also coming from the subject,? Wicomico County sheriff?s Lt. Tim Robinson said in a press release.

The investigating deputy awakened the man.

?Shelton advised the last thing he remembered was being on the property after a nearby concert but did not know how he ended up in the shed. The deputy surmised that in his intoxicated state, Shelton turned off the circuit breakers that controlled the electricity to the chicken houses,? Robinson said.

Shelton was arrested and booked into jail on charges of second-degree burglary, trespass and malicious destruction of property.

The property owner discovered the dead chickens Saturday morning. He told investigators that without power, the chickens will begin to die within 15 minutes.?The birds, which were due to be delivered to a local processing plant the following day, were valued at $20,000.

Allen Farms, which was going to process the birds, estimated its loss at $220,000, said sheriff's Chief Deputy Gary Baker.

Shelton had been at the owner's property the previous evening with a group of people that included the owner?s daughter, Baker said.

?The daughter thought he left, but instead he wandered into the shed where all the power controls and breakers were and turned it off,? Baker told NBC News on Tuesday.

"Quite frankly, he was probably in a condition where he really didn?t know what he was doing,? Baker said.

"The theory is that he may have been in there looking for a light switch," Robinson told DelmarvaNow.com.

Baker said he?s heard of flocks of chickens dying due to natural occurrences such as drought and heat waves, "but never anything like this manmade that we can remember.?

Bill Satterfield, executive director of Delmarva Poultry Industry Inc., a local trade group, said he was surprised by news of the poultry caper.

"I have never heard of a drunkard going in and killing chickens," he told DelmarvaNow.com. "This is a new one on me, and it's unfortunate that it occurred."

It?s not like the Bills traded for a guy with a long history of winning football (Jackson has a 17-17 career record as a starter), so for Young to have been deemed so deficient that Jackson?s a no-brainer upgrade should tell you what you need to know about his prospects for future employment.

Manila, Philippines -? Federal Land Inc. (Fedland), the real estate arm of taipan George S.K. Ty-led GT Capital Holdings, sees reservation sales hitting P12 billion this year, up 32 percent from P9.1 billion in 2011 as the country?s residential property market continues to experience steady growth.

Jose Mari H. Banzon, executive vice-president and general manager of Federal Land, said the company has already booked P8 billion in reservation sales for the January-July period, on track to realizing its yearend target.

?Our goal is to hit P1 billion in reservation sales a month,? he said.

To take advantage of a buoyant property market, the company would launch six projects in the second half, located in Fort Bonifacio, Binondo, Quezon City, Cavite, Paco Manila and Cebu.

Banzon said the company is building Central Park West, the second residential tower within its 10.4-hectare large scale mixed use complex in Bonifacio Global City. The project?s centerpiece is the 66-story Grand Hyatt Hotel which is touted to become the tallest building in the country.

Slated for completion in 2014, The Grand Hyatt Hotel would have 400 rooms and provide 40,000 square meters of premium grade office space. It would be managed by the Hyatt Group, a leading global hospitality firm.

The first six floors of the main skyscraper would house the hotel podium and ballroom while grade A financial and corporate offices would occupy the eighth to 30th floors. The upper floors to the penthouse levels, on the other hand, would comprise luxury suites and other hotel amenities.

Banzon said the company is also targeting to grow the share of rental operations to total revenues to 25 percent from the current 10 percent.

As of Dec. 31, 2011, Fedland had an available landbank of 100.7 hectares, of which 97.3 hectares are owned. The company believes its existing landbank would be sufficient for development over the next 20 years.

To attract a wider clientele base and increase its recurring income, Fedland is stepping up the development of its current portfolio of masterplanned communities that combine stand-alone high and mid-rise residential condominiums and mixed-use developments.

The company also intends to focus on developing office facilities catering to the business process outsourcing sector within its areas.

Its current portfolio includes the Grand Midori Makati, Bay Garden Club and Residences, Riverview Mansion and Four Season Riviera in Binondo, the Oriental Place in Makati and The Capital towers in Quezon City.? Fedland also operates the five-star Marco Polo Hotel in Cebu.

Pierre Cardin offering glass skyscraper to Venice

MILAN (AP) ? French fashion designer Pierre Cardin has designed a gift meant as an economic catalyst to Venice and the region: a 250-meter (800-foot)-tall modernist glass skyscraper housing a fashion university, luxury hotel suites and shops.

The "Palace of Light" has been described alternatively as a spaceship that crashed into the lagoon, a shiny fishing lure or an illuminated mushroom.

"It is seen with interest, but at the same time with open perplexity," said Claudio Borghello, a Venice city councilman. "There is not a skyscraper of this dimension in all of (the) Veneto (region), forget right on the lagoon." At the same time, "this could become a symbol that you can relaunch this part of the world."

Cardin, who turned 90 in July, designed his "Palais Lumiere" as a gift to his native Veneto, the region that includes Venice. While Cardin epitomizes French style, he is actually Italian-born: Pietro Cardin, trundled off from San Biagio di Callalta, north of Venice, by his parents to France at age 2.

Three interconnecting towers would be built at the industrial port of Marghera, an area in economic decline some 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Venice's landmark St. Mark's Square. Under the proposal, Cardin would clean up pollutants from the land, invest ?1.4 billion ($1.75 billion) himself and endow the fashion university, said Cardin's nephew, Rodrigo Basilicati, who has been pushing the project through the bureaucracy.

Plans envision 2,500 to 3,000 jobs on site created during construction, and another 2,000 to 2,500 after completion.

While welcoming the prospects of an environmental cleanup and new jobs, critics are concerned about overall impact on the fragile lagoon environment and a city already overwhelmed by mass tourism ? as well as visual pollution from the tower itself, which some complain has no relationship with the city's Byzantine architecture.

Architect Vittorio Gregotti urged Cardin: "If you want to do something for Venice, do something else." Italia Nostra, a preservation group, said the skyscraper, at three times the height of St. Mark's "would squash the city's proportions," and referred to the structure itself as a "giant illuminated mushroom."

To help persuade Venetians that the criticism is overstated, Cardin is opening an exhibit on the project in Marghera on Monday on the sidelines of the Venice Biennale of architecture, which opens Wednesday.

Basilicati said his uncle knew the project would be "a provocation." But the stylist wasn't quite ready for the intensity of the criticism.

"Let's say the reaction to the aesthetics he understands, even if it doesn't make him happy," Basilicati said. "On the other hand, the objections about the skyline and the environmental impact have disappointed him, using lies."

The towers, he insists, won't be visible at all from Venice's historic center, and only barely seen from the Lido island.

Italy's air traffic authority is expected to say within days if the tower's height interferes with local air traffic. After that, a committee of local authorities will convene in an effort to streamline final approvals, which could pave the way for construction to begin early next year.

"In an industrial zone like Port Marghera, which is not protected by UNESCO, I think this is only an improvement," Basilicati said

Taliban deny report of Haqqani commander's death

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan rejected reports that the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network has been killed, even as senior insurgents and members of the Pakistani government said they believe Badruddin Haqqani was dead.

Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email sent to reporters late Saturday that Haqqani is alive and in good health in Afghanistan.

The statement conflicts with assertions by a senior Taliban commander that a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan killed Haqqani. Pakistani intelligence officials have also said they are 90 percent certain he was killed in an American missile strike Tuesday in the North Waziristan region. They said their information was based on reports received from their agents in the field but acknowledged they haven't spoken to anyone who has seen the body.

If confirmed, Haqqani's death would mark a major blow to the organization founded by his father, Jalaluddin Haqqani, which is viewed by the U.S. as a powerful enemy in Afghanistan. The son is considered the network's day-to-day operations commander.

The Haqqani network has been blamed for a series of high-profile attacks and kidnappings in Afghanistan.

"A number of media have reported that Badruddin Haqqani has been killed. We would like to inform all media that this rumor is not correct," Mujahid said in the email.

"Badruddin Haqqani is in the country and his is occupied with his operational responsibilities. He is alive and healthy. The rumor about him being killed is more propaganda of the enemy," he said.

The senior Taliban commander's assertion that Badruddin died in a drone strike has not been independently confirmed, and the U.S. does not comment publicly on its drone program, which is widely reviled by the Pakistani public and has been a source of tension with Islamabad.

All except Mujahid spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the news.

The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure and is believed to have played an active role in kidnappings, extortion and high-profile operations in Afghanistan.

Replacing him would be a challenge but not impossible, said Daniel Markey, a Pakistan expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.

"The question would be whether anyone would be as trusted, as well-placed, would have forged the kind of longstanding connections and would have the kind of pedigree that he has," said Markey. "This is a big hit if it's true but it's not going to put them out of business."

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter, David Rohde, the department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability. The group has shown little interest in negotiating with the Washington, and has pulled off some of the highest-profile and most complex attacks in Afghanistan, although not necessarily the most deadly.
