Can America still afford the war?

A war with an entire nation is different than a war on a terrorist group. Fighting terrorists requires a near constant, expensive military presence because you can't really conquer Al-Quaida. Fighting an actual nation requires you to go in, show that you have the means to destroy everything they have, and then get a treaty that favors the winner.

Would the morale of those people who are barely able to get by somehow get lower because we've changed who were fighting? Would unemployment suddenly get worse or better from an actual war instead of this pseudo military policing? If you want an example of what might happen, look to WW2, where the war saved America from the depression. I don't want to compare someone threatening our financial system to enemy attacks, but it still might be able to whip up national support and unity, to some degree.

As for the actual war on terrorism going on now, I personally believe in one choice: go in with extreme force and wipe every trace of terrorism from wherever it may be. I'd like to bring all our soldiers home, but what the hell are we going to do with all of them in this job market, and the current system of half-assed, long term occupation, while proving to be effective in reducing terrorism little by little, is very expensive.
