The Last Vispo

Co-editor of?The Last Vispo, Nico Vassilakis, addresses the fact the women of visual poetry have been ignored in previous vispo collections on?The Volta.

"It's true, the genre of visual poetry has primarily been a sausage fest. The concrete poetry anthologies of the 1960s, it seems, ignored women completely even though one of its renowned editors, Mary Solt, was female. Much has changed since then, but clearly not enough to promote the idea that visual poets can be either male or female. For decades, it's been a global boys club in need of being cracked open and invaded by women.

Enter The Last Vispo Anthology: Visual Poetry 1998-2008, which includes more women than ever published in an international collection of visual poetry?Since finishing the book we have become pleasantly, if not unfortunately aware of more active or newly active female visual poets.?There's no easy fix to what fifty plus years of neglect has done. More publishing, more exposure of visual poets would help, would alleviate this issue?"

Evening Will Come?issue #32 (that you can read online) features female poets/vispoets responding to?The Last Vispo, articles and more.

TEOTFW by Charles Forsman

The End of the Fucking World (TEOTFW)

TEOTFW follows James and Alyssa, two teenagers living a seemingly typical teen experience as they face the fear of coming adulthood. Forsman tells their story through each character's perspective, jumping between points of view with each chapter. But quickly, this somewhat familiar teenage experience takes a more nihilistic turn as James's character exhibits a rapidly forming sociopathy that threatens both of their futures. He harbors violent fantasies and begins to act on them, while Alyssa remains as willfully ignorant for as long as she can, blinded by young love.

Forsman's story highlights the disdain, fear and existential search that many teenagers fear, but through a road trip drama that owes as much to Badlands as The Catcher in the Rye. Forsman?s inviting, Charles Schulz-influenced style lends a deadpan quality that underscores the narrative's tension. The End of the Fucking World is certain to be one of the most talked-about graphic novels of 2013.

"Danny Bland's prose is a fist through a medicine-cabinet mirror. In Case We Die is filled with degenerate tales, violent outbursts and underbelly laughs, but Bland's debut novel really surprises with its moments of tenderness and insight and redemption." ? Mark Yarm, author of Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge

"Our anti-hero is floating in a tiny lifeboat made of heroin, graveyard shifts & rock music. His companions are two fabulous women; a bombshell who robs banks & a beautifully pale rock violinist who can barely dodge suicide. ICWD is much funnier & more satisfying than any other junkie rock'n'roll tragedy." ? John Doe (X)

"Bland is a brutally funny and bravely honest writer. A perfect guide through the bloodshot streets and desperate bedrooms of the underground wilderness." ? Dave Alvin (Blasters)

"In Case We Die is a poetic and elegant journey ... straight to the gutter." ? Wayne Kramer (MC5)

"Beautiful, literary redemption." ? Exene Cervenka (X)

"A great piece of work ? full of filth and heart." ? Steve Earle

"A suitably Peckinpah finale. Bravo. It has been like a traveling dream state and sometimes familiar look into the abyss." ? Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs)

"I am a believer in what Bland has to say. He writes with eloquence, candor, darkness, and humor....the good stuff!" ? Duff McKagan (Guns 'N' Roses)

"Danny Bland is one of the most interesting people I've ever known. Beneath a crusty, punk rock exterior lies one of the biggest hearts I've ever seen. This book? It's the literary version of Danny Bland." ? Damien Echols (West Memphis Three)

"It wasn?t the pounding headache or the all too familiar taste of blood in my mouth that woke me that morning, but the stink of cat piss. They all have cats. Cats and bad tattoos and mops of dyed black hair that reek of cigarettes and watermelon Bubblicious." This debut novel by veteran Seattle musician Danny Bland follows a pair of outsiders who find themselves locked in the palpable, dizzy grunge-rock scene of early-'90s Seattle.

Vulnerable to the high relief of heroin addiction, Bland?s characters ? Charlie Hyatt and Carrie Finch ? are unapologetic protagonists whose epiphanies are as blinding as their weaknesses. Finch, 21, beautiful and dangerous, drowns out the voices in her head and the consequences of a misled life with electric guitars, booze and petulant misbehavior. Her single abiding faith takes the form of an unlikely savior ? '60s psychedelic musician Roky Erikson.

At the ripe old age of 28, Hyatt attempts to make sense of the cards he has been dealt: a miserable job in a porn shop, a drug habit he cannot afford and the wildly unstable woman he had chosen to love.

Two damaged people can balance a seesaw for a long time, even finding the illusion of safety; but when one gets off unannounced, the other will fall. As Finch finds sobriety, her sanity and her relationship with Hyatt falter until an inevitable event brings the two back together a decade later.

?Stephen Dixon is one of the great secret masters ? too secret. I return again and again to his stories for writerly inspiration, moral support and comic relief at moments of personal misery, and, several times, in a spirit of outright plagiaristic necessity: borrowing a jumpstart from a few lines of Dixon has been a real problem-solver in my own short fiction. Please read him, you.??? Jonathan Lethem

?Dixon is one of the few writers whose new work I will put everything aside to read, which is to say he is in the company of Alice Munro, Lorrie Moore, and Lydia Davis.... Put aside whatever you?re reading, and read him.??? J. Robert Lennon

?Startling candor, humor, and concern; every utterance promptly qualified; rigorous narrative economy combined with near-manic obsessiveness. Embrace Dixon and you will be held by a princely storyteller.??? John Barth

?There is no better chronicler of our antic and anxious age than Stephen Dixon.???Daniel Handler

?Mr. Dixon wields a stubbornly plain-spoken style; he loves all sorts of tricky narrative effects. And he loves even more the tribulations of the fantasizing mind, ticklish in their comedy, alarming in their immediacy.? ? The New York Times

Stephen Dixon, one of America?s great literary treasures, has completed his first novel in five years. His Wife Leaves Him is as achingly simple as its title: A man, Martin, thinks about the loss of his wife, Gwen. In Dixon's hands, however, this straightforward premise becomes a work of such complexity that it no longer appears to be words on pages so much as life itself. Dixon, like all great writers, captures consciousness. Stories matter here, and the writer understands how people tell them and why they go on retelling them, for stories, finally, may be all that Martin has of Gwen. Reminders of their shared past, some painful, some hilarious, others blissful and sensual, appear and reappear in the present. Stories made from memories merge with dreams of an impossible future they'll never get to share. Memories and details grow fuzzy, get corrected, and then wriggle away, out of reach again. Martin holds all these stories dear. They leaven grief so that he may again experience some joy. Story by story then, he accounts for himself, good and bad, moments of grace, occasions for disappointment, promises and arguments. From these things are their lives made. In His Wife Leaves Him, Stephen Dixon has achieved nothing short of the resurrection of a life through words.

When asked to describe his latest work, the author said that "it's about a bunch of nouns: love, guilt, sickness, death, remorse, loss, family, matrimony, sex, children, parenting, aging, mistakes, incidents, minutiae, birth, music, writing, jobs, affairs, memory, remembering, reminiscences, forgetting, repression, dreams, reverie, nightmares, meeting, dating, conceiving, imagining, delaying, loving."

His Wife Leaves Him is Dixon's most important and ambitious novel, his tenderest and funniest writing to date, and the stylistic and thematic summation of his writing life.

Stephen Dixon was born in 1936 in New York City. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1958 and is a retired faculty member of Johns Hopkins University. He is also a two time National Book Award nominee ? for his novels Frog and Interstate. He still hammers out his fiction on a vintage typewriter.

Report: Jose Aldo broke his right foot in first round of featherweight title defense at UFC 163

There was a lot of speculation after Jose Aldo stopped Chan Sung Jung in the fourth round of their featherweight championship bout at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday about why Aldo threw so few kicks. Aldo is one of the best kickers in the sport, but Jung didn't take many kicks from Aldo.

Now, a report out of Brazil may explain why.

Aldo broke his right foot two minutes into the bout, his coach, Andre Pederneiras, told MMA Fighting's Guilherme Cruz.

He broke his foot two minutes into the fight. The first kick he threw landed on [Jung?s] knee.

If true, that makes Aldo's win all the more remarkable. He was able to beat a high-level opponent easily with a broken foot. At one point in the fight, when Jung tried a flying knee, Aldo stepped to the side, caught Jung took him down and pounded him on the ground.

When Jung dislocated his shoulder in the fourth round, Aldo finished the fight by kicking him in the shoulder. That required him to land on his right foot in what had to have hurt tremendously.

Aldo also tried several flying knees and landed heavily on his right foot. He clearly has super human pain tolerance.

He also showed the versatility in his game. He was able to find a different way to win when his kicks, one of his greatest weapons, were taken away from him. He used a lot of wrestling in the bout, which was surprising at the time but understandable now.

Pederneiras told Cruz that Aldo wouldn't fight again this year. After that effort, he's earned the rest.

WikiLeaks sentence hearing turns to damage done by Manning

    By Tom Ramstack

(Reuters) - A U.S. State Department official is set to testify on Monday about how much convicted soldier Bradley Manning's leaks of classified diplomatic cables to the WikiLeaks website hurt ties between Washington and its allies as well as global intelligence-sharing methods.

Judge Colonel Denise Lind on July 30 found Army Private First Class Bradley Manning, 25, guilty of 19 criminal counts related to the leaks, the largest unauthorized release of secret U.S. data in the nation's history.

Manning was found not guilty of aiding the enemy, the most serious charge he faced, but the crimes still carry penalties that could lead to up to 136 years in prison.

The sentencing phase, which began last week, was set to resume on Monday and is expected to last at least until August 9, military officials said.

Military prosecutors are expected to call Patrick Kennedy, a veteran State Department official who was part of an "Information Review Task Force" set up in the wake of the leak, to assess damage to U.S.-foreign relations or any other fallout.

"The post-WikiLeaks environment reminds us that technology is a tool to execute solutions but is not in itself the answer," Kennedy, the Under Secretary for Management, told the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs in March 2011.

"Simply put, we must more consistently sort out what we share before determining how we share it," Kennedy said, adding that national security officials must do a better job confining intelligence that could threaten security.

Also on Monday, Lind said she would rule or issue guidance on the defense motion to exclude testimony that uses "chain of events" reasoning to suggest future potential damage done by Manning, rather than specific harm he has directly caused.

Manning's lawyers, who have portrayed him as naive but well intentioned, were expected to ask Lind for leniency in sentencing. They argue the soldier's aim was to provoke a broader debate on U.S. military policy, not to harm anyone.

The Army private first class was in Baghdad in 2010 when he was arrested and charged with leaking files, including videos of a 2007 attack by an American Apache helicopter gunship in Baghdad that killed a dozen people, including two Reuters news staff.

Other files contained diplomatic cables and secret details on prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay.

Most of the leaked diplomatic cables originate after 2005, when a new information sharing system was adopted to address intelligence failings exposed by the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Kennedy is among a parade of prosecution witnesses to testify for the government, including one who said Manning's leak undid part of a U.S. intelligence-sharing system, before Manning's lawyers will also have a turn to call their own witnesses.

Another U.S. State Department official, former ambassador to Belarus Michael Kozak, testified on Friday that the leaks led to foreign informants being moved over fears for their safety.

Access to classified information remains a sensitive subject after Edward Snowden, a U.S. intelligence contractor, revealed the National Security Agency's secret program to collect phone and Internet records.

Obama Administration Vetoes Partial Ban on Import and Sale of Certain Apple Products

    Published on 08-04-2013 12:30 AM

The Obama administration recently vetoed a partial ban on the import and sale of some Apple products, which was granted back in June in a response to a ruling made by the United States International Trade Commission. The ban, which applied to AT&T models of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS and 3G models of the iPad and iPad 2 was granted after the ITC found that the aforementioned products infringed on Samsung Patent No. 7,706,348, titled ?Apparatus and method for encoding/decoding transport format combination indicator in CDMA mobile communication system.?

In a recent letter to Irving A. Williamson, the Chairman of the ITC, the United States Trade Representative Michael B. G. Froman declared the following:

After extensive consultations with the agencies of the Trade Policy Staff Committee and the Trade Policy Review Group [...] I have decided to disapprove the USITC?s determination to issue an exclusion order and cease and desist order in this investigation. The letter was continued by noting that the Obama administration was ?committed to promoting innovation and economic progress, including through providing adequate and effective protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights.? The folks over at The Verge noted that this is the first time since 1987 that the President of the United States has interfered with a decision made by the ITC. This comes after the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) recently criticized this sort of use of sales ban (rather than monetary compensation) as a means of executing patent infringement *** it n effect harms rival products and companies and doesn?t promote a competitive trading environment.

The folks over at CNET previously cited experts who believed it was unlikely for the administration to step in on this case but this was proven to be wrong. It was just last week that Verizon attorney Randal Milch published an open letter calling for presidential intervention in this case to veto the ban. The ban would have otherwise gone into effect on August 5th, 2013. Fortunately for Apple, the ban has been vetoed.

Finance Ministry launches manual on composite budgeting - Ghana ...

You Are Here: Home ? General News ? Finance Ministry launches manual on composite budgeting

Page last updated at Saturday, August 3, 2013 15:15 PM //

Ministry of FinanceThe Ministry of Finance has launched a manual to guide the implementation of a composite budget for metropolitan, municipal and district Assemblies (MMDAs).

The composite budget forms part of public financial management reforms by? the government aimed at improving efficiency and accountability of MMDAs operating at various levels.

Also, the composite budget is to see to the effective allocation of resources to enhance service delivery of the various MMDAs.

At the maiden conference for MMDA budget officers in Accra, a Deputy minister of finance, Mr Kwaku Ricket Hagan, explained that the various reforms by the ministry was to deal with challenges of public financial management to put such systems on a sound footing and propel the country for growth and also move it from the present low middle income status into a higher middle income bracket.

He said the government was committed to ensuring that resources for decentralised functions were transferred through the composite budget process to MMDAs to improve service delivery.

?I assure you that government is taking the necessary steps to ensure that resources are disbursed in a more predictable and timely manner,? he said.

According to Mr Hagan, the ongoing fiscal decentralisation reforms which entailed entrusting the assemblies with the authority and capacity to generate, allocate and utilise financial resources to promote socio- economic development of the districts would not make any meaning unless the lapses in financial management at the MMDA level were addressed.

The forum, he said, was apt as it provided the opportunity for stakeholders to discuss their respective roles in improving financial management and service delivery on a more sustainable basis.

The deputy minister also charged the budget officers at the MMDA level to play their roles effectively in ensuring the elimination of weaknesses that undermine budgeting performance and produces poor budgetary outcomes.

The acting Director of Budget at the Ministry of Finance, Mr Patrick Nomo, appealed to participants to use the platform created to network extensively and share experiences as part of strategies to improve budgeting and financial management at the districts.

Grim Jobs Report | National Catholic Reporter

Grim Jobs Report | National Catholic Reporter?by MSW. ?MGB: Wage growth is going up in some places, not others. ?If we can get a new minimum wage passed, it will increase wages up the line. ?Interestingly, as I stated on my own blog and Facebook page, as well as directly to the White House, adding a COLA to the minimum wage should be the price for adopting chained CPI. ?This takes both issues off the table and leads to automatic wage growth to go along with productivity growth. ?Until workers own all the technology and capital, they are at a disadvantage in both the automated and world economies - because there are always more workers than employers. ?The minimum wage has been shown to counteract that without increasing joblessness.

Frankly, if there is joblessness, that should be an invitation for the establishment of funded training programs, where employees are paid a wage to train - since it seems that the current labor shortage in certain fields is not being made up by hiring people and training them - industry wants only those already trained and would rather short staff than provide training. ?Short staffing also keeps wages low.

(AP) ? Authorities outlined plans Friday to break up two sit-ins by supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi, saying they would set up a cordon around the protest sites, and riot police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators threatening a TV complex.

Morsi backers also showed their defiance by briefly setting up a third camp near the airport, but later folded their tents and left.

The military-backed interim government seeks to end a political stalemate that has paralyzed Egypt and deeply divided the country. Supporters of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood say they will not disperse until he is returned to power.

The second-ranking U.S. diplomat arrived in the Egyptian capital for talks on the political crisis, as Secretary of State John Kerry warned both sides that "the last thing we want is more violence."

Also Friday, Amnesty International reported cases of alleged killings and torture at the hands of Morsi supporters inside the protest camps, saying that one man had his throat cut and another was stabbed to death.

In southwestern Cairo, police fired tear gas at Morsi supporters who rallied in front of Media City, a site housing most of Egypt's private TV stations, a security official said. A second official told the state news agency that protesters tried to "obstruct traffic in an attempt to affect work at the complex."

The rally was "a desperate attempt by rioters from the (Islamist) current," Maj. Gen. Abdel-Fattah Othman, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry, told the private TV station Mehwer. "There was reinforcement from police and army that will not allow any reckless person to get close to the Media City or storm it."

He described the protesters as "brainwashed" to attack broadcasters perceived as secular opponents of the Islamists. Last year, Morsi supporters held a sit-in near Media City, often harassing TV personalities and forcing many of them to sneak into the studios from other entrances.

Demonstrators said they gathered there to protest the lack of local media coverage of their activities, and insisted their gathering was peaceful. Health ministry official Khaled el-Khateeb said 23 people were injured in the clashes; and security officials said two conscripts were also wounded, including one with birdshot.

The security officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to address the media, said 31 rioters were detained following the clashes. Footage of the detainees sitting on the ground outside the media city was aired on private channels.

The new unrest came as state-controlled TV reported that security forces will establish a cordon within 48 hours around the two main protest sites in Cairo where thousands have been camped out since before Morsi was ousted by the military on July 3.

The government offered protection and "safe passage" to those willing to leave the two main camps ? a large one outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque in eastern Cairo and a smaller one near Cairo University's main campus in Giza. The leadership had earlier given orders to police to end what it described as "threat to national security" and sources of "citizens' terrorism."

Authorities will let people leave without checking their identities or arresting them, but they will not allow anyone into the protest camps, the report said. It did not elaborate on the next steps, but the government earlier said it will use water cannons and tear gas in dispersing the crowds.

The Morsi supporters are also planning rallies late Friday outside security headquarters near one sit-in site, including the Republican Guard club, where they had staged a protest that turned bloody last month, and another army building.

The security cordon around the protest camps raises the possibility of new violence, which has killed more than 130 Morsi supporters and injured hundreds since the military coup. The ouster followed mass demonstrations calling for Morsi to step down after a year in office, saying his policies had failed and he had put power in the hands of his Islamist group.

Facing domestic and international pressure to avoid bloodshed, authorities have taken the unusual step of going into details of its security plans.

Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim told a newspaper that police have finalized plans for breaking up the sit-ins, and were awaiting orders from prosecutors to start the second phase of its operation.

Police have given authorities information about weapons in the protest camps and the "dangers emanating" from there, and that the next phase of the plan, which includes surrounding the sites, would begin within hours, he was quoted as saying.

"The forces have established their presence in various areas with the aim of protecting security and stability," Ibrahim said, adding that the ministry was awaiting legal action from the prosecutors. He said a prosecution team will accompany the security forces to monitor how they deal with the protesters.

Ibrahim told the newspaper that he was awaiting approval from the National Defense Council on measures relating to the final phase of the operation, which would be the use of force while trying not to injure anyone.

The Amnesty International report quoted a survivor of an attack by Morsi supporters near the Cairo University sit-in as saying that he saw one bloodied man have his throat cut and another stabbed to death.

The report also cited accounts from survivors that Morsi backers also abducted and tortured their political opponents with beatings and electric shocks at or near the protest sites.

The Interior Ministry last weekend had said 11 bodies were found near one of the protest sites, with some showing signs of torture, apparently by members of the sit-ins who believed the victims were spies.

Near the Rabaah protest camp, people armed with sticks and makeshift body armor stood guard behind walls of sandbags, tires and bricks.

One speaker defiantly told the crowd that the military leader, Gen. Abdel-Fatah el-Sissi, appeared reluctant to carry out his promise to break up the sit-ins.

"This man is about to fall now in the face of all these retractions," the speaker said to thousands of people who gathered for a meal to break their daytime fast for the holy month of Ramadan.

Ahmed Madani, 26, was installing a new tent at one of the camp entrances, saying the facilities will have a kitchen and toilets.

"We are here to show them that we are determined to stay and we won't give up," he said. "Even if I have to die, I will not leave. We are thousands ready to die for our cause."

The pro-Morsi camps have disrupted daily life in Cairo, blocking traffic and antagonizing some residents already suffering under Egypt's economic woes.

"A peaceful sit-in does not block roads, it doesn't terrorize people, it does not kill people and it does not attack people," said Wahid Idris, an opponent of the Muslim Brotherhood. "I want them to use any means to put an end to that sit-in."

In addition to the smaller sit-in across town, a new vigil sprung up briefly near Cairo's international airport, on the outskirts of the suburb of Heliopolis, in a neighborhood known as "The Thousand Houses."

An Associated Press reporter saw thousands of protesters, many of them are families and women in conservative Muslim dress, occupying a square and laying prayer rugs on the asphalt. They raised banners with Morsi's portrait saying, "Down with military rule," waved Egyptian flags and chanted, "Go away Sissi! Morsi is my president."

About six hours later, however, the camp was dismantled because organizers believed it to be insecure, said Adel Hassan, a protester who folded his tent.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns arrived in Cairo, and an Egyptian Foreign Ministry official said he would meet with interim leadership officials and representatives from the Muslim Brotherhood and its allies Saturday.

Amr Darag, one of the Brotherhood negotiators who will meet with Burns, told the AP that the group and its allies are looking for "confidence-building measures" in order for them to sit at the table with their rivals.

Such measures include releasing detained Brotherhood leaders, unfreezing the group's assets, lifting the ban on its TV stations and ending violence against its protests. Darag said the group can't order its protesters to go home because they are fighting for their rights and the reinstatement of Morsi as president.

It was unclear if Burns would see Morsi during his second visit to Cairo since the coup. On Monday, top European Union diplomat Catherine Ashton saw Morsi for two hours at the facility where he is being held by the military. An African Union delegation also briefly met the ousted president a day later.

In London, Kerry sought to clarify controversial remarks he made Thursday about the crisis when he told Geo TV in Pakistan that the Egyptian military was "restoring democracy."

The comment was seen by some as a signal the U.S. was siding with the military, even though the State Department has repeatedly said the U.S. is not taking sides.

Kerry said Friday that all parties ? the military as well as the Morsi supporters ? should be inclusive and work toward a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

"The last thing that we want is more violence," he said. "The temporary government has a responsibility with respect to demonstrators to give them the space to be able to demonstrate in peace. But at the same time, the demonstrators have a responsibility not to stop everything from proceeding in Egypt."

A spokesman of Egypt's Mulim Brotherhood, Gehad el-Haddad, denounced Kerry's remarks, asking if Kerry would similarly approve of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel deposing President Barack Obama if large protests took place in the United States.

Rights groups have warned against using force to end the protests. The New York-based Human Rights Watch urged the interim leadership to take all measures to avert bloodshed.

"To avoid another bloodbath, Egypt's civilian rulers need to ensure the ongoing right of protesters to assemble peacefully, and seek alternatives to a forcible dispersal of the crowds," said Nadim Houry, deputy director of the Middle East and North Africa division of Human Rights Watch.

The Muslim Brotherhood has opposed all measures taken by the military since the coup, including the appointment of an interim president, the suspension the constitution and the disbanding of the Islamist-dominated legislative council.

Burbank girl, missing since 2005, is tracked down in Mexico

An 11-year-old girl from Burbank who was allegedly abducted by her mother and taken to Mexico eight years ago has been found, police announced Friday.

In 2005, the mother ? identified by police as Gabriela Barrett, 53 ? took her then-3-year-old daughter to Mexico to ?protect her from her allegedly verbally abusive father,? said Burbank Police Officer Joshua Kendrick.?

Police later determined the accusations against the father to be inconclusive, Kendrick added.

At the time, the family had no idea Barrett planned to flee with her daughter, Kendrick said. Police suspected the pair settled in Tijuana, but were unable to locate them, even with the help of Mexican authorities.

Burbank Police Det. Dave Kleinfeld ?never gave up searching? for the child, and recently located Barrett?s adult son, who put him in touch with his mother, Kendrick said.

After Barrett agreed to return to the United States, police made arrangements with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials for Barrett to surrender at the border.

Burbank police met border officials in San Ysidro, where they arrested Barrett on suspicion of maliciously concealing a child from a lawful custodian, Kendrick said.

The girl was released to a family member.

Sports and hobbies. If you have accumulated a lot of expensive gear, you may be reluctant to let it go. Keep things you love and use with some regularity, and sell or donate the rest.
    • Seasonal gear: If you use your boogie boards only for one week each year while on vacation, consider renting them as needed instead. You will save storage space and save room in your car on your trip to boot.
    • Hobbies you have given up: Think you might take up golf, drumming, painting or kayaking again "one day"? Let it go. If your passion is rekindled in the future, seek used equipment to get started.

(AP) ? Bird poop for beauty?

That's what goes into facials at a luxury spa where the traditional Japanese treatment using imported Asian nightingale excrement mixed with rice bran goes for $180 a pop.

About 100 women and men go into the Shizuka New York skin care salon, just off Manhattan's Fifth Avenue, each month to get the treatment, which is promoted as a way to keep the face soft and smooth using an enzyme in the poop to gently exfoliate the skin.

Spa owner Shizuka Bernstein, a Tokyo native married to an American, has been offering what she calls the Geisha Facial for about five years.

"I try to bring Japanese beauty secrets to the United States," says Bernstein, who learned the treatment from her mother.

The Geisha Facial poop treatment, while relatively rare in the United States, is no secret in Japan, where it was first used in the 1600s by actors and geishas.

"That's why Japanese grandmothers have beautiful complexions," says Duke Klauck, owner of the Ten Thousand Waves health spa in Santa Fe, N.M., which offers a Nightingale Facial for $129.

On a recent afternoon in Manhattan, Mari Miyoshi arrived at the sixth-floor Shizuka New York spa to try the treatment for the first time.

"I'm a stressed-out New Yorker," the 35-year-old occupational therapist announced as she reclined on a table, relaxing amid aromas of camellia, lavender and rose.

The treatment begins with steam to open the pores and soften the skin. Cream is applied. And then comes what Bernstein calls "the nightingale part."

She pours the cream-colored poop, dried and finely ground, into a bowl, mixing it with the rice bran using a small spatula. She applies the potion to Miyoshi's face with a brush, rubbing it in with her hands.

    Does it smell?

"Yes, but like toasted rice," Miyoshi says.

After about five minutes, it comes off with a foaming cleanser and Miyoshi's face is draped in a warm, wet towel bathed in lavender and geranium essences. Finally, the grand finale ? a green-tea collagen mask.

"Sooooo nice," Bernstein says softly, looking at Miyoshi's radiant face.

Dr. Michele Green, a Manhattan cosmetic dermatologist, says that while the nightingale facial "definitely has some rejuvenating effect, I don't think it's any different than, say, an apricot scrub or a mask that you could buy in a local pharmacy."

A common misconception is that any old bird poop, even from pigeons, is used. Bernstein says only droppings from birds of the nightingale species are used because they live on seeds, producing the natural enzyme that is the active ingredient.

"We don't do Central Park facials," she says, "because those birds eat garbage."

Vine update adds notifications and Facebook sharing

    Vine

Post sharing still limited to just Facebook and Twitter.

An update to the 6-second video sharing service Vine is adding new activity notifications and sharing intents. If you choose to have them turned on, you will now receive push notifications whenever someone likes, comments or mentions you in a Vine post. Notifications can be managed in the standard ways of choosing your ringtone and toggling whether or not to have vibrations or a notification LED for notifications. Naturally, you can turn them off completely as well.

This latest update also adds proper sharing directly to Twitter or Facebook from the app. Just hit the menu button below a Vine that you want to share, and you'll be given "Share on Twitter" and "Share on Facebook" options. Although we would prefer if Vine just used the standard Android sharing intent to let you share Vine links to any app, this is a good start.

You can grab a download or update to the latest Vine app from the Play Store link above.
