OpEdNews - Article: "My Vote Doesn't Matter": Helping Students ...

By Paul Loeb, Alexander Astin and Parker J, Palmer

You've heard it again and again. "My vote doesn't matter," students too often say. Others complain that politicians are "all the same and all corrupt." How do we overcome this cynical resignation and encourage students to register and vote despite their conviction that the game is fundamentally rigged?

In 2008, many students vested huge hopes in Barack Obama, reinforced by the enthusiasm of their peers. Now, they're dealing with what veteran pollster Charlie Cook?summed up?as "disappointment and disillusionment." Too many regard electoral politics less as a potential arena for change than a corrupt swamp likely to drown their remaining ideals. In a?Rock the Vote survey?shortly before the November 2010 election, 59 percent of students said they were more cynical than two years before, and 63 percent of those who doubted they'd vote justified their likely withdrawal by agreeing that "no matter who wins, corporate interests will still have too much power and prevent real change." They did indeed stay home, with roughly four million fewer students participating than just two years before, according to the highly respected?CIRCLE?youth research center. For instance,?Ohio's student participation rate dropped from 69 percent to 22 percent,?Wisconsin's from 66 percent to 19 percent, and Florida's from 61 percent to 19 percent. (The Ohio figure is based on a small sample, but fits the larger pattern). Student participation dropped significantly in nearly every state.

Toss in uncertain job prospects, cuts to higher education, and massive student debt, and it's no wonder that so many students despair about their power to make a difference in the electoral realm. That's true even as they continue to volunteer in one-on-one service, with?70 percent of college freshmen?considering it "essential or very important to help people in need." Last fall, at a University of Vermont dorm devoted to community service, students described an array of creative projects they were engaged with, then fell silent when Paul (one of the authors of this piece) asked about potential electoral involvement, finally concluding that the differences between the candidates barely mattered. In?a Harvard survey this spring, just 36 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds believed it was honorable to run for public office.

For those of us who follow elections closely, this is one of high stakes, with salient differences between the two major parties. It's also a key election for American higher education, given the fiscal pressures that both individual students and most campuses are facing. Because it's a presidential year, more students will undoubtedly vote in 2012 than in 2010. But for many, across the political spectrum, the links between issues and candidates seem tangential and remote. If we want them to fully participate, we need to create a commons where they can reflect on issues and candidates, and provide a rationale for why their involvement matters.

THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER

This means offering examples of how close electoral races can be, educating students on issues and candidates, and making the case that, even if their preferred candidates will not usher in the millennium, working to elect them is still worthwhile--in part because it will allow students to keep pressing them on all the issues they care about.

We might begin by reminding our students of the very small margins by which critical elections have been won and stress, the importance of their vote, whoever they choose to vote for. That's true both because of the immediate impact it may have, and because their participation will set a pattern in their lives going forward. We can talk about the 537 vote Florida total that handed George Bush the presidency in 2000, or the 312 votes by which Al Franken won the 2008 Minnesota Senate race. Students may assume that their votes will be inconsequential, but multiplied by those of all their peers, they matter, time and again.

Paul once interviewed a Wesleyan University student named Tess who, inspired by an environmental conference, joined with several friends to register nearly three hundred fellow students concerned about environmental threats and cuts in government financial aid programs. Nearly all ended up supporting their strongly sympathetic Congressman, who won re-election by twenty-one votes. Tess had hesitated before she began. She didn't think of herself as a "political person," didn't want to come off like "a politician spouting a line," and wondered whether her efforts would even matter. Nonetheless, she decided to go ahead and do the best she could. Had she done nothing, her Congressman would have lost.

Paul had his own similar experience securing three votes for his preferred Washington State gubernatorial candidate on the day of the 2004 election. One forgot it was Election Day. Another didn't know if it was still OK to use an absentee ballot. The third needed a ride to the polls. After three recounts, the difference was 133 votes, so had just a handful of his fellow volunteers stayed home, or if there had been a handful more on the other side, the outcome would have been reversed.

But even when students understand the math, many still resist participation. They'll say they don't know enough and that "the issues are too complicated." They'll insist the candidates are really "all the same." They'll say this even when candidates hold very different positions on issues from health care, climate change, sexual politics, and immigration to tax policies, higher education budgets, student financial aid, and likely Supreme Court appointments. For some, saying they don't know enough may just be an excuse for withdrawal, though we've heard such statements even from many who are very involved in other ways. Others hold back because they feel helpless to change things. Caught in a self-fulfilling perception of powerlessness, they decide it makes little sense to take on the challenge of following candidates and issues.

We can begin to counter these cycles of withdrawal by helping students reflect on candidates' positions, and helping them separate truth from fiction amid the barrage of attack ads that many will encounter--ads that risk deepening students' sense of electoral politics as just a toxic field of lies. Students have told us repeatedly they want "more fact-based campaigning" and "to learn more about platforms." That's something we can help with as educators, promoting both classroom and co-curricular discussions about where candidates actually stand.

But it's not just lack of information that leads students to withdraw. When they say "My vote doesn't matter," they're also conveying a sense that the political system is so corrupt that no matter who wins, true power will remain in the hands of the wealthy and connected, and that the voices of ordinary citizens will be ignored. Even when they concede that their votes could alter the electoral result, many doubt that this will make a significant difference.

That's particularly true in the current election, where many students are dealing with dashed hopes from 2008, and students of all perspectives have ambivalent responses to both presidential candidates. In Obama's case, because his campaign drew so strongly on slogans of hope and change, and because so many students supported him, one-time supporters are particularly wrestling with disillusionment. Forty percent in?a CIRCLE poll this summer described their prime response as "disappointment." Many who lean toward Romney are also ambivalent because of the inconsistency of his stands and his deviation from their version of true conservatism. In contrast with four years ago, most seem to regard this election as a contest between candidates they have to apologize for, rather than ones who speak to their most far-reaching hopes.

FROM LYNDON JOHNSON TO THE TEA PARTY

One antidote to cynical resignation is historical context--which is something we can do our best to offer even if we aren't historians or political scientists. The more students see their vote as promoting the kinds of changes they'd like to continue to work for, the more likely they'll be to show up at the polls, bring others along, and stay involved after the election. We might suggest they view voting not as a sole way to make change, but one in which electoral politics complements other approaches in a toolbox of change such as one-on-one service or political organizing and protest. Carpenters don't discard their saws or drills just because they prefer swinging a hammer. They recognize that you can't build a house without using all three.

61 Push Ups, in 60 Seconds (Cooler Than You Think) [VIDEO ...

This year, at the tenth annual Anytime Fitness conference (a meetup for franchise owners and employees) one fit-feat stood out amongst all the speakers, awards, and fancy dresses. In the middle of Chicago?s Millennium Park, April Calderon, worked out her arms, chest, abs, hips, and legs for hundreds of spectators. It only took her a minute.

Calderon, who is the general manager of three Anytime Fitness clubs in Central Florida, pressed out 61 pushups? in one minute? balancing on three medicine balls. In case you weren?t counting, that?s more pushups than there are seconds in a minute.

To verify Calderon?s coolness, let us inform you that the 24-year-old has tackled this balancing act before, and it was for charity. Calderon?s September 14th go at the push-ups hasn?t yet been confirmed by The Book of Alternative Records, but if and when it is, she will hold the world record for most pushups completed on 3 medicine balls in 1 minute. She?d be added to the collection of weird, crazy, incredible, and unusual feats of dexterity, endurance, strength, and agility held by the book.

While there?s been a slight uproar over the integrity of the last 20 or so push ups, we?ve got to hand it to Miss Calderon for motivating the crowd and youtube viewers alike. So excuse me while I try to even balance on three unstable medicine balls in our office and not break my schnoz.

What 60-second fit goals do you want to tackle? Tell us in the comment section below or tweet the author @nicmcdermott.

Archive ? Importance of Personal Finance Management

finance managementWhen a person reaches the age of majority, is on track to take full responsibility for managing their personal finances. Whereas parents have done their homework for the child until that age, are not responsible from that moment the errors in personal finance management of their child.

The art of managing personal finances can be taught through a structured learning or may be an innate quality in the mindset of the person. You must then define the strategies to ensure that every decision made in terms of personal finance management is backed by real experience and a desire to improve their financial prospects in the medium to long term.

What is amazing is that people fall into the same traps that his predecessors have fallen, as if there was nothing to learn throughout the process. It is also a unique feature of personal finance have the opportunity to improve past behavior. If there is a problem with personal finance management that occurs again in our life we must make sure that this time we will take the right decision, based on past experience. Not many things in life that can offer this type of opportunity.

The most basic principle that will determine success in the management of personal finances is the ability of people to control revenues and expenditures. These two variables should be approximately equal to stay in a neutral financial position. The idea is that income is greater than the expense and the person may start having some surplus that can be allocated to savings and you can invest at a later stage. Most people who fall into problems in the management of their Personal finances often spend more than they earn. To make matters worse they might decide to borrow money to cover shortfalls that have occurred in your personal budget. So poor an income stream combined with rising debt trap can reach the person completely.

Debt is one of the main problems for the management of personal finances, there are a multitude of financial companies that offer credit cards and various types of loans with really simple requirements, we know that these can charge very high interest rates and change the conditions thereof, causing it to lose control of debts.

Managing personal finances is one of those areas that need focus and discipline to reach the proposed goals and targets. The alternative is a debt burden is unsustainable. Two important attitudes for managing personal finances are spending responsibility and commitment to reach our financial goals.

Which is the Most Effective Exercise For Weight Loss, Aerobics Or ...

?

I get this question a lot so it makes sense to write an article about it. To answer this question it would take more than an article but we will try to cover the basics in the next few lines.

Next to diet, what you eat, Exercise is the most important part of your weight loss plan. Most people will concentrate on either the diet or the fitness workout, but I believe they are equally important for a healthy life, fitness, losing and keeping the weight off. So which is the most Effective exercise to lose weight? Well to answer this question lets look at the two basic type of exercise routines so that we are all on the same page.

The first is resistance training, and this simply is lifting weights, and engaging different muscle group, in order to stress then so they will not only become stronger, more flexible but will grow, and I am not talking about body building type growth. Most people, women in particularly always say they do not want to lift weight because they do not want to look masculine or build bulky muscles. Believe me in order to reach to that level you have to lift a heck of a lot of weight, and eat a heck of a lot of protein. So we are just talking about toning up.

Resistance training is important because it forces your muscles to burn more fat for energy, this increases your metabolism and your body becomes more efficient at burning fat. So this type of exercise is critical for weight loss. Apart from the weight loss component, studies show that weight training strengthens the bones and prevents osteoporosis or weakening of the bone or loss of bone mass. Better muscle tone means less workout injuries, and the health benefits goes on and on.

So what about Aerobics workout? This is the second type of work out that I want to talk about. Aerobic exercise is the process of increasing the heart rate through a 15-20 minute sustains exertion thus increasing the oxygen levels in the blood stream and burning fat to fuel the increase energy require to sustain said exertion. If that went over your head then look at it this way, if you jog around the block for 15-22 minutes your heart rate will increase, and your body will require more oxygen for the increase energy required, this will force the body to suck in more air, (hence the deep breathing) more oxygen in the blood stream means more fat can be metabolized and burnt and fat burning is what we want.

Once again aerobics has multiple health benefits, such as lower cholesterol, increased the release of endorphins which gives you a feeling of well being and lowers the risk of depression, helps with insomnia, and have a general health benefit for the whole body.

Having said all of that, which exercises routine, is better? Is it resistance training or aerobics? You guessed my answer, they are both equally important.

They are so powerful in weight loss and keeping you in shape that imagine if you combined then in your workout? For optimal benefits you should do at least 35 min of cardio or aerobic activity per day, and that can take the form of swimming, running, biking, walking, roller blade, tennis, racket ball or a workout DVD. The important thing is to make sure it is sustained for at least 25-35 minute.

for weight training or resistance training your can do some push ups, pull ups, squats, bench press, arm curls or you can do a circuit style training where you work multiple muscle group within a 45 minute time frame. The goal is to put your muscles under pressure and push then to grow, this requires changing up the weights and increasing the intensity over time.

So there you have it, combine both type of workout into your weight loss plan and watch the weight melt away.

Learnable Programming: Thinking about Programming Languages ...

September 28, 2012 at 11:37 am

Bret Victor has written a stunningly interesting essay?on how to make programming more learnable, and how to draw on more of the great ideas of what it means to think with computing. ?I love that he ends with: ?This essay was an immune response, triggered by hearing too many times that Inventing on Principle was ?about live coding?, and seeing too many attempts to ?teach programming? by adorning a JavaScript editor with badges and mascots.?Please read Mindstorms. Okay?? ?The essay is explicitly a response to the Khan Academy?s new CS learning supports, and includes many ideas from his demo/video on making programming systems more visible and reactive for the programmer, but goes beyond that video in elaborating a careful argument for what programming ought to be.

There?s so much in his essay that I strongly agree with. ?He?s absolutely right that we teach programming systems that have been designed for purposes?other than?learnability, and we need to build new ones that have a different emphasis. ?He uses HyperTalk as an example of a more readable, better designed programming language for learning. ?His video examples are beautiful and brilliant. ?I love his list of characteristics that we must require in a good programming language for learners.

I see a border to Bret?s ideas. ?There are things that we want to teach about computing where his methods won?t help us. ?I recognize that this is just an essay, and maybe Bret?s vision does cover these additional learning objectives, too. ?The learning objectives I?m struggling with are not made easier with his visual approach.

Let me give two examples ? one as a teacher, and the other as a researcher.

As a teacher:?I?m currently teaching a graduate course on prototyping interactive systems. ?My students have all had at least one course in computer programming, but it might have been a long time ago. ?They?re mostly novices. ?I?m teaching them how to create high-fidelity prototypes ? quite literally, programming artifacts to think with. ?The major project of the course is building a chat system.

  • The first assignment involved implementing the GUI (in Jython with Swing). ?The tough part was not the visual part, laying out the GUI. ?The tough part was linking the widgets to the behaviors, i.e., the callbacks, the MVC part. ?It?s not visible, and it?s hard to imagine making visible the process of dealing with whatever-input-the-user-might-provide and connecting it to some part of your code which gets executed non-linearly. ?(?This handler here, then later, that handler over there.?) ?My students struggled with understanding and debugging the connections between user events (which occur sometime in the future) with code that they?re writing now.
  • They?re working on the second assignment now: Connecting the GUI to the Server. ?You can?t see the network, and you certainly can?t see all the things that can go wrong in a network connection. ?But you have to program for it.

As a researcher:?I?ve written before about the measures that we have that show how badly we do at computing education, and about how important it is to make progress on those measures: like the rainfall problem, and what an IP address is and whether it?s okay to have Wikipedia record yours. ?What makes the rainfall problem hard is not just the logic of it, but not knowing what the input might be. ?It?s the invisible future.

I disagree with a claim that Bret makes (quoted below), that the programmer doesn?t have to understand the machine. ?The programmer does have to understand the notional machine (maybe not the silicon one), and that?s critical to really understanding computing. A program is a specification of future behavior of some notional machine in response to indeterminate input. ?We can make it possible to see all the programs execution, only if we limit the scope of what it is to be a program. ?To really understand programming, you have to imagine the future.

It?s possible for people to learn things which are invisible. ?Quantum mechanics, theology, and the plains of Mordor (pre-Jackson) are all examples of people learning about the invisible. ?It?s hard to do. ?One way we teach that is with forms of cognitive apprenticeship: modeling, coaching, reflection, and eliciting articulation.

Bret is absolutely right that we need to think about designing programming languages to be?learnable, and he points out a great set of characteristics that help us get there. ?I don?t think his set gets us all the way to where we need to be, but it would get us?much?further than we are now. ?I?d love to have his systems, then lay teaching approaches like cognitive apprenticeship on top of them.

Thus, the goals of a programming system should be:

to support and encourage powerful ways of thinking

to enable programmers to see and understand the execution of their programs

A live-coding Processing environment addresses neither of these goals. JavaScript and Processing are poorly-designed languages that support weak ways of thinking, and ignore decades of learning about learning. And live coding, as a standalone feature, is worthless.

Alan Perlis wrote, ?To understand a program, you must become both the machine and the program.? This view is a mistake, and it is this widespread and virulent mistake that keeps programming a difficult and obscure art. A person is not a machine, and should not be forced to think like one.

AMD computers run 500,000 Android apps with BlueStacks - GigaOM

Got an AMD chip in your Windows PC? Then you just gained access to more than half a million Google Android apps thanks to an AMD partnership with Bluestacks. A virtualization app and website filled with Android titles can help bridge your mobile and desktop world.

Today is a day of celebration for Android app addicts who own an AMD-powered computer: The chip-maker has partnered with BlueStacks to bring 500,000 Android mobile apps to the PC. A new?AMD App Zone website contains both the BlueStacks virtualization software and an app store with featured free apps available for download. Both companies are also working with hardware makers to pre-install BlueStacks.

?PC shipments are set to decline 4% next year,? said BlueStacks CEO, Rosen Sharma in a statement to GigaOm. ?The entire sector needs an electric jolt and AMD has just given it to them. There?s nothing better than adding half a million apps ? many of them household names, to a Win8 experience that?s begging for them. This is a boon for OEMs not only in terms of user experience but also for margins.?

Sharma may be on to something as Microsoft Windows 8 is due out next month. The operating system will surely support numerous legacy applications, but the BlueStacks software can help add half a million additional apps; some of which new PC buyers may already be familiar with on their Android phone or tablet. And the?BlueStacks player software is optimized for AMD?s Radeon graphics and Open GL drivers, so app performance should be good. Add improved touch support for Windows 8 and I see potential.

I first looked at BlueStacks last year because I noted a concerted push to merge mobile and desktop computing to some degree. That shift continues today as we move more traditional computing tasks into small apps on smartphones and tablets. There?s still a time and place for ?old school? computing apps ? and will be for years to come ? but for the upcoming generation weaned on mobile apps, a solution such as BlueStacks surely has appeal.

Air Duct Leaks Dallas | Sealing Air Ducts | Repair | Highland Park ...

Air Ducts are used to distribute heating and air in houses with forced-air heating and cooling systems. In the average Dallas home, about 20% of air is lost due to air duct leaks. The result is higher energy bills and difficulty keeping the house comfortable, regardless of the temperature.

Signs that you might have an air duct leak:

  • You have stuffy rooms that never seem to feel comfortable
  • You have rooms that are difficult to heat or cool
  • You have high summer and winter utility bills
  • Your ducts are located in the attic
  • You find tangled or pinched tube in your system

There are many benefits to a sealed air duct system. Your heating and cooling systems will run more efficiently and therefore provide lower utility costs.

At Eastin Air, we seal air leaks, improve the performance of your system, help keep your utility bills down and provide a full Home Energy Audit.

Sealing your Air Ducts will make your home more comfortable. The temperature will be easier to regulate in your home with your air conditioner and heater.

Sealing leaks can also improve your indoor air quality. Fumes from outdoor chemicals, insulation particles and dust can enter your duct system. Sealed Air Ducts can prevent the pollutants from entering your indoor air.

Mr. Cohen had this to say concerning the current epidemic:

Over the past 30 years, childhood obesity has more than tripled. More than one third of children and adolescents are currently overweight or obese in the US. Its reached epidemic proportions and the health consequences are immense.

People were significantly more active in the past. Children walked to school, participated in gym class and played outside for hours before dinner. Meals were typically home cooked with reasonable portion sizes and included fruits and vegetables. Fast food was rare as was snacking between meals.

Today, kids get a ride to school, physical education and after-school sports have been cut, afternoons are spent playing video games or surfing online. The average 18 year old spends 7.5 hours a day using a TV, computer, video game or cell phone. Parents work more to make ends meet and families eat fewer home-cooked meals with far larger portion sizes. Caloric intake has risen by 31% from forty years ago over half from fats and oils. Sweetened beverages have increased in portion size to an average of 20 ounces and the average American ingests 15 extra pounds of sugar than forty years ago.

According to Jeff Cohen, Co-Owner of the Fitness Compound Santa Clarita, Childhood obesity causes a myriad of immediate health effects, as quoted from http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/obesity/facts.htm including:

Obese youth are more at risk to develop cardiovascular disease such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure

Obese adolescents are more likely to have pre-diabetes

Greater risk for bone and joint problems and sleep apnea

Social and psychological problems such as poor self-esteem, ostracism and bullying

The long-term health effects are chilling:

Children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese adults and therefore suffer from heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and osteoarthritis.

Several cancers are associated with obesity including breast, colon, kidney, pancreas, thyroid, ovary, cervix, prostate as well as multiple melanoma and Hodgkins lymphoma.

Children who are obese as early as age 2 are more likely to become obese adults. Its reached epidemic proportions. These are the main reasons why we have created the programs we have, For The Kids.

Mr. Cohen said he would be happy to share his Fun Formula to any fitness club in America who has a desire to reach out to the youth of this country. He can be contacted at:

Insurance company bets on benefits of integration | Health Policy ...

Insurance company bets on benefits of integration

By Katie Kerwin McCrimmon

The biggest obstacle to blending physical and mental health care is money.

Doctors can?t bill insurance companies for treating their patients? mental health woes and psychologists can?t treat physical ailments. So the two health specialties remain separate, while confused patients get splintered care and often get sicker.

Most experts acknowledge that the system is ridiculous, but feel shackled to insurance company billing codes.

Enter an insurance company that wants to prove once and for all that integrated physical and behavioral health care is both better for patients and less expensive in the long run.

In a new experiment set to start next spring in western Colorado, the nonprofit health insurance company, Rocky Mountain Health Plans, will give hefty ?umbrella payments? to three primary care practices that are already working to integrate behavioral health. Also known as ?global payments,? the funding will replace traditional ?fee-for-service? payments that reimburse doctors for each visit with a patient or each test they order. The insurance company will then encourage the health providers to give patients excellent integrated care. That will vary from site to site and will depend on patients? needs. Care could include a traditional office visit with a doctor or a health coach, email exchanges, telephone counseling or a typical counseling session. Patients will get all the care in the familiar setting of their primary care office.

At the same time, Rocky Mountain will give the control groups ? three other primary care practices that are also trying to integrate behavioral health ?? reimbursements under the traditional ?fee for service? model, where providers bill for appointments and procedures.

Actuaries and data experts will then compare costs and patient outcomes. (Click here to read more about the experiment.)

The aim is to prove quickly that patients do better when doctors are paid to keep patients well rather than worrying about seeing as many patients as fast as possible to keep the cash flowing. Rocky Mountain ultimately wants to change the way it pays providers throughout Colorado and spur change around the country.

?This is not an academic exercise,? said Patrick Gordon, director of government programs for Rocky Mountain and executive director the Colorado Beacon Consortium, a coalition of nonprofit health groups that is seeking to boost the quality and efficiency of health care in western Colorado. ?This will be a transformative pilot that is being built with the goal of replicating success across the country.?

Throughout Colorado, Rocky Mountain insures about 220,000 people. Altogether the primary care practices that participate in the pilot will serve 30,000 to 50,000 patients including the full spectrum of privately and publicly-insured patients. The organizers have not yet picked the practices that will participate.

Rocky Mountain is fronting the cash for the reimbursements. A group called the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association?will coordinate the project while the Colorado Health Foundation?is paying for an evaluation to see how well the three-year program works.

Clinical psychologist Benjamin Miller ?will evaluate the effort. He is director of the Office of Integrated Healthcare Research and Policy in the family medicine department at the University of Colorado Denver.

?This is a total game changer in every facet,? said Miller. ?It?s disruptive innovation. We?re telling the system, ?We?re not going to play by the old rules anymore. We?re going to play with new rules and we want you to operate as a team.??

Miller said the experiment ?takes off the handcuffs of payment reform? and should produce some useful results.

?Everyone wants to know the answer to sustainability,? he said.

Currently, doctors are stuck trying to string together grants, fudge billing codes or give free office space to counselors in hopes that they?ll provide help to patients while creating their own streams of revenue.

Under the new concept, worries about finances will be gone.

?We?re going to take that off the table. Here is the financial support to make this sustainable,? Gordon said.

Rocky Mountain is pumping millions into covering up-front costs for various efforts to strengthen primary care practices and thereby reduce much more costly health expenditures such as surgeries, ER visits and lengthy hospital stays. The effort to integrate behavioral and physical health is part of the larger vision to bolster primary care.

Gordon could not say exactly how much the integration experiment would cost. But, in the long run, he and others are confident that giving patients much better primary care will help achieve the elusive holy grail of health reform: ?bending the cost curve,? or slashing the increasing costs of health care in the U.S.

?We know that behavioral health integration is absolutely essential,? Gordon said. ?The cost and structure of the payment model will probably vary from site to site. This project will give us much deeper insights into what those factors are.?

Gordon said initial estimates show that if primary care practices give high quality integrated behavioral and physical health care to all patients in western Colorado who earn at or below 250 percent of the poverty level ? or about $56,000 a year for a family of four ? health providers could cut the rate of growth in health expenditures by 4 to 5 percent over three years.

?Even relatively modest impacts on (growth) trends can produce more than enough to pay for all of these interventions,? Gordon said. ?It also puts us in a position to share gains with government payers and employers.?

The ultimate goal is to make behavioral health sustainable in primary care. That means giving people help with a much wider array of issues beyond traditional mental health concerns such as depression or schizophrenia.

For instance, Gordon cites the potential benefits of a technique called motivational interviewing in which health providers spend time asking patients how they want to change their lives. The technique can help change unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, poor diet or a sedentary lifestyle, all of which lead to poor health outcomes.

?When you engage a patient in what they want for themselves?they are much more likely to ?change elements of their own behavior,? Gordon said. ?This is very much in contrast with the traditional didactic approach of most conversations between physicians and patients.?

One of the most promising methods for inducing behavior change is to start group visits for people with diabetes, for pregnant moms or for obese people.

?They have proven to be very powerful,? Gordon said. ?You get a peer dynamic. And it?s the group that drives the discussion more than an authoritarian physician.?

Spotlight Your Business at Events : Marketing :: American Express ...

Event marketing can be a effective strategy for small businesses that want to connect in person with their customers. So many businesses are building strong customer relationships online, but if you?re looking to cultivate that relationship in a memorable way, events can pack a powerful punch. ??

Autumn marks the high season for events, from conferences and trade shows, to webinars and private shopping parties. With so much going on, it can be challenging to break through the noise and capture the attention of your target audience. Still, customer events, when geared towards education and appreciation, can pay off in terms of strengthening your ties to existing customers while uncovering new ones.

To help you make the most of your event marketing efforts, here are a few high-yield, low-cost tactics to consider.

As there are many ways to approach event marketing, we?ve categorized the recommendations into the following three areas: industry events, Web events and in-store events. Within each category are marketing best practices to be conducted before, during and after the event.

Industry Events?

Before: Build buzz ahead of time using e-mail and social media marketing. Consider developing special newsletters dedicated to the event and spotlighting key presenters, exciting news and presentations. Be sure your content addresses the entire event, not just your participation in it. ?

During: Use mobile check-in technology to eliminate snaking registration lines. Mobile check-in also allows you to connect with attendees during the event to let them know of breaking news, schedule changes and other show activities. Remember to make this an option for your attendees, as opposed to texting them without their consent.

After: Send personalized follow-up notes based on your one-on-one conversations and the sessions participants attended. In your message, include a relevant offer, as well as information related to their specific interests.

Web Events

Before: Focus on existing customers and invite them to participate in an event where they will gain knowledge or a new skill.?

Much like an industry event, you?ll want to promote the Web session using e-mail, newsletters, blogs, Twitter and your Facebook Business Page.

As part of the preparation, consider using presentation tools that allow you to connect with your audience via video, slide sharing and instant messaging. You may also want to provide registered attendees with the option to receive text message reminders about the event.

During: Encourage dialog among participants and be sure to record the event and make it available on your website. ??

After: Use the questions and discussion points as fodder for your next newsletter, webinar or blog post.

Private Events

Before: Host an invitation-only event for your VIP customers. To heighten their interest in attending, allow them to share the invitation with a friend and let them know the event will be closed to the public. ?

If possible, review their recent purchases and make notes on their areas of interest based on feedback from your social and e-mail marketing efforts.

During: Use the information about their past purchases and recent activities as the foundation to engage them in conversations and learn how you can improve the customer experience.?

Also, when you make new connections, ask permission to keep in touch via customers? preferred choice of communication, which is likely to be e-mail or social media. ?

After: Customize your thank you notes and include a great offer that can be shared.?

When you combine technology with best practices in small-business marketing, you will take the spotlight during the upcoming event season.

The Job Of An Internet Marketing Coach | Find Profitable Niches ...

Internet Marketing Plan

Online business owners who want to ensure higher traffic and profitability usually hires a professional internet marketing coach and online marketing consultant. The endeavor might cost some, but if you know how to choose the right person, then it can be one of the best decisions you could ever make for your venture. As you know, traffic is tantamount to your business? ability to make money. The higher the traffic, the more secure your profit becomes. Of course, you can exert efforts to attain this goal by yourself, but if you want to guarantee that things will go smoothly, then a coach can come in quite handy. In this article, let?s talk more about this job.

An internet marketing consultant?s primary responsibility is creating a marketing plan based on the objectives of a business. Naturally, you as an entrepreneur would have to work with him or her on this. You need to express your goals so he or she can devise tools, resources, and techniques to get there.Basically, there are four crucial things that an internet marketing coach can see you through: creating of content creation, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), marketing through social media, and building of links.

Creating content and SEO comes as a package because the former is always done under the consideration of the latter. When content about business marketing tips is made, it is made in such a way that will help optimize the site. On the other hand, social media marketing is letting the public know of your business through the use of social platforms like Facebook or Twitter. Then, building of links is about establishing connections with other well-respected sites to improve your own repute.

Besides these crucial jobs, there are other benefits internet marketing consulting can let you enjoy. For example, your coach can offer you individual or group courses that will train and educate you about online marketing. They are designed not just to make your site better but also to effectively instruct you on the continuing process of brand promotion. The courses can eventually get you ready in doing the job yourself. Hence, there may come a time when you won?t need to pay for a coach anymore. It will not only save cash but also provide you with the chance to grow better as a multi-skilled entrepreneur. Now, who wouldn?t want that?

There are indeed a lot of good things that can come out of hiring an online marketing consultant. Your only job is to look for one whom you can fully trust. An ideal coach must have years of experience in the field. It doesn?t matter much whether he or she works in a firm or individually. As long as he or she has a solid background and a portfolio as back up, then quality service can be ascertained. Taking risk in hiring an inexperienced internet marketing coach cannot warrant success as much a veteran can. Hence, if you want to play safe, go for a firm or a person who has been around for a reasonable time. Someone who knows the intricacies of the job even with eyes closed.

Kazakh leader appoints PM as chief of staff

ALMATY (Reuters) - Kazakhstan's powerful president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, appointed his long-serving prime minister as chief of staff on Monday in a move to balance the rival groups vying for influence in the oil-producing former Soviet state.

Karim Masimov, 47, was selected by Nazarbayev to run his presidential office after serving nearly six years as premier of Central Asia's largest economy, a period of sustained economic growth and billions of dollars in foreign investment.

The Nazarbayev loyalist replaces Aslan Musin, who was appointed head of the budgetary accounts committee.

Nazarbayev held closed-door talks with members of parliament about replacing Masimov. Two sources close to the government told Reuters that Serik Akhmetov, first deputy prime minister, was likely to be promoted to the premiership later on Monday.

Kazakhstan holds 3 percent of the world's recoverable oil reserves and has attracted more than $150 billion in foreign investment in two decades of independence from the Soviet Union.

Nazarbayev, 72, dominates political life and tolerates little dissent in a country of 17 million people stretching from the Caspian Sea to China. A member of the last Soviet Politburo, he has ruled Kazakhstan since before independence in 1991.

Without an obvious successor, the veteran leader periodically reassigns important jobs in the state apparatus to guard against any one group obtaining too much power. Analysts said both Masimov and Musin had grown in influence in the last year.

"Imbalances have appeared within the ruling elite," said Andrei Chebotaryov, an independent political analyst in Almaty.

He said Masimov had established himself as a political force in his own right after distancing himself from Timur Kulibayev, the president's billionaire son-in-law, who was removed from the top job at the sovereign wealth fund in December.

As head of the Samruk-Kazyna fund, Kulibayev was ultimately responsible for the oil companies where a long-running protest by thousands of sacked oil workers erupted into deadly clashes with police on December 16-17.

"If he (Masimov) had earlier been associated with Timur Kulibayev's group, he has developed into his own person in the last few years and created his own influential group," Chebotaryov said.

Masimov was appointed prime minister in January 2007 and is credited with having maintained economic growth through the worst of the global financial crisis, which struck Kazakhstan later the same year.

He was reappointed immediately after a parliamentary election in January. In an interview with Reuters at the time, he identified macroeconomic stability as his priority. Kazakhstan expects its economy to grow by 5.8 percent this year.

He also encouraged reforms to civil society and the justice system in the wake of the clashes in the oil region.

Akhmetov, identified by two sources as the leading candidate to replace Masimov, is a qualified metallurgical engineer who - like Nazarbayev - began his career at the steel plant in the city of Temirtau now owned by ArcelorMittal.

Prior to his appointment as first deputy prime minister in the January cabinet reshuffle, 54-year-old Akhmetov had been governor of the industrial region of Karaganda.

Hunger University: Are College Students the New Face of Food Insecurity?

There?s a startling new trend on college campuses, and it?s sweeping the nation: hunger.

This isn?t the ?hunger? people talk about when discussing ?poor college kids? who survive on ramen noodles and peanut butter. It?s much more serious than that. Increasingly, students at America?s colleges and universities are finding that between multiple part-time jobs, crushing tuition costs, and, of course, their studies, they often wonder what their next meal will be. To tackle food insecurity among students, many colleges and universities have opened food pantries on campus, where struggling students can discretely receive assistance when they need it.

Officials at Auburn University recently announced that starting Oct. 1, a room in the school?s busy student center will be turned into a student-run food pantry. The project is a collaboration between Auburn?s Division of Student Affairs and Committee of 19, a hunger-relief group comprised of students. Katherine Hettinger, coordinator for advocacy and case management in Auburn?s Division of Student Affairs, says the idea for a food pantry emerged from her encounters with students who are in crisis ? many of them financially.

?We may not be able to pick them out of a crowd,? she says, ?but if a member of our family is hurting, we need to help those family members.?

Committee of 19 president Lauren Little, a senior at Auburn, had no idea her friend struggled with food insecurity until she confided in her one day. As a freshman, the failure of the young woman's family farm and a serious medical emergency shattered the family's already fragile finances, leaving the young student on her own to get through school. She held two jobs throughout most of college, yet still relied heavily on food banks, food aid organizations, and her church to fill in where she fell short. Getting to the food bank was tough for her, however, without a car, and Little recalls the young woman's embarassment.

"Mostly, what I got from her was a feeling that she didn?t want anyone to see her," Little remembers. "Her grades weren?t great that first year because she was constantly worried about her family back home and how she was going to be able to make ends meet. As a freshman, to have to support yourself through college ? that?s a huge transition."

Organizers say students like this young woman are why an on-campus food pantry at Auburn is so important. But the 25,000-student Alabama university is just the most recent school to start formal food assistance programs for its students.

Michigan State claims to have the first student-run food pantry in the country, started in 1993, which distributes over 50,000 pounds of food annually, according to data from its website. At Florida State?s food pantry, students can only take one bag of food at a time, but can visit ?as often as necessary,? according to its website. The Rack, a food pantry at West Virginia University, opened in 2010 after campus officials learned of university students who were hiding their hunger because of embarrassment. Other on-campus food pantries have been opened in almost every state, from Georgia to Oregon. Many of the food pantries are run ?by students, for students,? a model Hettinger says Auburn will adopt as well.

?We have so many students that are passionate about helping others, and they really want to do things to serve their community,? she says, pointing to the large faith-based population on campus. ?When students are helping other students, it?s a really powerful thing to give back to your school family.?

Hettinger says that after the campus newspaper published an article last week announcing the food pantry, several professors contacted her with names of students they suspect may be hungry. While students struggling with food insecurity are difficult to stereotype, Hettinger says she often encounters international graduate students, often supporting families, who study hard, work as a teacher?s assistant for a modest stipend, and are ineligible for government assistance. These students may not only have trouble putting food on the table, she says, but also retaining adequate housing.

Both Hettinger and Little say assisting students who are struggling to afford good food is one way students and faculty can be "the Auburn family," which is an oft-used moniker on the tight-knit campus.

"We talk about [the Auburn Family], and it's a war cry at our sporting events," Little says, "but how much more important is [hunger] than our football games?"

AUSTIN -- From sunrise to sunset, the celebration could be seen throughout town.

It was Austin's 21st gay PRIDE anniversary. Locals and visitors were out and about ?in the city to celebrate the day and what it represents.

"You could be yourself and no one is going to judge you," one local said.

"It is a good way to show everybody that Austin is different, keep Austin weird," an LGBT supporter at the PRIDE parade said.

But the cheering crowds came just one day after a potential hate crime happened in the city they adore.

"I put my hands like this. Up over my head so that he wouldn't, he wouldn't get my face," Nick Soret said.? Nick Soret and his friend were ordering pizza from Ropollo's trailer Friday night when he said a man attacked them for being gay.

"Some guy next to me tells me 'what are you looking at?' and I'm like, 'I'm not looking at you,'" he said. "He thought I was checking him out or he thought?I was looking at him and so for that, he knocked all my friend's teeth out, he punched me in the face."

Austin police are investigating the crime.?

Those at PRIDE said the idea of a hate crime is unacceptable.

"It doesn't matter when it happens, it shouldn't happen," a local at PRIDE said.

If you have any information on the crime, contact police.

Locals at the PRIDE celebration said they are keeping the two victims in their thoughts.
