Back before I had a kid, I used to take weekly Pilates classes at a local studio. While many of the moves bore passing resemblance to those we do in my yoga class, it was unabashedly a workout?a sweat-inducing, core-honing, fast-paced workout. I loved it (and so did my abs). But then my daughter came along and something had to give, so I said goodbye to Pilates, but I missed it!
So when I had the opportunity recently to test out two home Pilates systems, I was delighted! Here?s what I discovered:
Portable Pilates Studio by Empower Fitness
Pros: This deceptively simple system (it?s just a bar with a resistance cord and foot strap at each end) is easy to put together, and you can follow the workouts on the DVD or just go free-style, twisting, curling, and lifting in all sorts of directions. The DVD is versatile, offering three workouts (plus a bonus arms sequence) that you can mix and match. Instructor Gin Miller gives excellent direction, and while the routines are pretty simple, they?re still challenging.
Cons: The quick-reference poster only offers six exercises.
Cool extra: The moves are often shown in split screen, from two different angles?really helpful when it comes to getting just the right form.

CoreBody Reformer by Nautilus
Pros: Where do I start? I loved this! It?s sturdy and easy to assemble, and the end bar unscrews to store inside the body of the system (called the Roller) when you?re done. The cords have three levels of resistance, and you can switch from one to the other with, literally, the press of a button. I can?t say enough about the accompanying DVD?trainer Jennifer Galardi gives terrific, detailed instructions (she?s very likeable), and the workouts combine strength, cardio, balance, and lots of core work for a true full-body challenge. But don?t get me wrong?you don?t have to use the DVD. My daughter and I had a blast using it as a balance beam, then making up our own moves with the resistance cords. More good stuff: It also comes with a track-your-workouts poster, a collection of workout cards, and a washable cover.
Cons: There?s a carrying strap so you can schlep the Reformer around, but it?s pretty heavy, so you may not want to go far. Also, the two Stabilizers that hold the Roller in place don?t fit inside the unit for storage.
Cool extra: Use it like a foam roller for an awesome massage. You can either follow the ?Renew? part of the Stretch & Renew routine, or just do whatever feels good on your deserving muscles.

Guaranteed Income Does Not Guarantee Retirement Success
I suspect in part as an outgrowth of the stock market meltdown of 2008-09, guaranteed income products (annuities) in 401(k) and other retirement plans are a major topic of discussion. The Treasury Department recently gave the go ahead for the use of annuities in retirement plans. As a practical matter the widespread use of these products is still a bit off into the future.
I?wrote an earlier post in this blog and one for US News about my thoughts and concerns surrounding annuities in retirement plans. A good idea in theory, the reality of the implementation concerns me.
Let me focus on one additional area of concern. While a guaranteed income product that the participant would purchase as part of their investment in the plan would provide a guaranteed lifetime income stream, there is no guarantee that this stream of income would be sufficient to guarantee the retirement lifestyle the participant seeks.
Said another way, the inclusion of a guaranteed income option in a retirement plan does not absolve the participant from determining how much they need to save for retirement and how they need to allocate their investments. Even the use of a Target Date Fund or a managed account option requires the participant to ensure that the fund manager is investing their money in a fashion that fits their retirement accumulation needs.
Besides concerns such as the fees tied to these options and the selection and monitoring of an insurance provider for these products, the prospect of these products providing retirement plan participants with a false sense of security in terms of their retirement readiness concerns me greatly. A guaranteed income option might be a good tool for a retirement plan participant, but it is in no way a substitute for good old fashioned financial planning. At the end of the day, participants still need to accumulate a sufficient amount in their retirement plan accounts in order to be able to generate a meaningful monthly income stream if they choose to go the annuity route.

Home stagers can make a number of small changes to a property that can dramatically shorten the time it spends on the real estate market while also increasing the final sales price. Home staging expert Debra Gould, also known as?The Staging Diva, shares 5 top tips for getting a house ready to sell:
1. Make sure that showing appointment isn?t just a drive-by
Just because there?s a showing booked on your home doesn?t mean the potential buyer will actually go inside. Imagine you?re a home buyer and your real estate agent has 10 houses to show you today. When you drive up to what could be your dream home, you see a broken railing and children?s toys strewn across a weed-filled lawn. You don?t have any time to waste, so you?re probably going to say, ?Let?s move on,? skipping the showing appointment entirely.
Curb appeal not only attracts potential buyers who happen to be driving by, it also helps draw prospective buyers into your home once they already have a showing appointment booked with their agent. When a property looks unkempt, it scares off potential buyers (unless they?re looking for a tear-down at a rock bottom price). To enhance curb appeal:
??? ?Cut the lawn and ensure fallen leaves and weeds are removed. Keep walkways and driveways freshly swept.
??? ?Add planted urns or hanging plants to the entrance area.
??? ?Repair or replace any obvious defects to the front door/hardware, mailboxes, railings, address sign or lights.
??? ?Move garbage and recycling containers from the front of the house or tuck them neatly in a garage or shed.
??? ?Pressure wash the exterior and decks. If necessary touch-up up paint.
2. Stash your keepsakes and keep your home clutter-free
De-cluttering is essential, especially when you remember that many people move because they feel too crowded in their current homes. Your treasured collection of decorative plates, figurines or stuffed animals will look like clutter to most potential buyers. ?Tackle one area at a time so de-cluttering isn?t so overwhelming.
You?ll probably have to go through each closet more than once to get its contents down to the absolute essentials, but it?s worth the effort. Try setting a timer for 60 minutes and it will no longer seem like an endless task. Consider that any time you spend now on this task will make packing and moving that much easier.
Rent a storage locker so you can keep your beloved items while you?re selling the house, and then have them delivered to your new address after your move.
3. Avoid scaring buyers away with a To Do list
You don?t want potential buyers focusing on one flaw after another during a showing.?No one wants a list of projects or problems to deal with when they?re buying a home.?You want them to fall in love with your home and imagine themselves living there not thinking about how much less they should offer you because of everything they?ll have to do.
Try to be very objective and do a walk through to spot problems. You might want to ask a highly critical friend or relative to do this for you because when you live somewhere too long you become blind to the problems.
Look for chipped paint on the door frames or scuffs on walls that need touch ups. Glue down any peeling wallpaper.
Ensure all electrical outlets and light switches have un-cracked covers. Repair or replace broken tiles, dripping taps and moldy caulking. These little things make a big difference in the buyer?s mind!
4. Color is your friend when it?s time to sell a house
White walls often look cold and sterile, unless you warm the room up with accent colors and patterns. If you have to repaint a home?s interior or some rooms in a home, choose a pleasing color palette that allows each room to flow nicely into the next. All colors should go together.
Try to repeat one signature color throughout a home. A feature color in one room can be repeated as an accent in the others, through vases, artwork, throws or decorative pillows.
Bring life to a neutral decor with cut flowers or a potted orchid for example.
5. Make a big impact with a little art
By strategically using art, you can enhance a home?s perceived value, draw the eye away from tiny flaws, give an otherwise uninteresting space a focal point and replace personal memorabilia.
Don?t just hang something on the wall where an old picture hook happens to be. Position art so that the center is 60? up from the floor. Make sure the size of the piece is appropriate to the size of the wall. Art with a large frame on a small wall can make the entire area seem smaller. Avoid religious art or anything edgy that might offend potential buyers.
These are just a few of the many things that can be done to improve your home?s appearance and to make it more appealing to home buyers. While the steps can be time consuming, the results are worth it.

AT&T Labs, Carnegie Mellon research haptic-feedback steering wheel for turn-by-turn directions
According to Technology Review, this isn't the first time haptic feedback has been tested as a driving aid, although past tests have, notably, resulted in "fewer turn errors" by those behind the wheel. Best of all, the tech is capable of sending more than just navigation cues -- it could certainly be useful in a Telsa. So when can you expect to find a force-feedback steering wheel in your ride? Technology Review cites Kevin Li, an AT&T Labs researcher on the project, who says the main hurdle is making something that people will just "get," and that it's still "years" away from becoming a possibility. While there's no photos of the setup just yet, a full report on the research will get released in June. Hey, there's always Forza and Gran Turismo, at least for now -- right?

Kazakhstan angry spoof anthem played at event
MOSCOW (AP) ? Kazakhstan has labeled the playing of a spoof of its national anthem at an international sporting event "a scandal," and demanded a probe into the incident.
Maria Dmitrienko won a gold medal for Kazakhstan on Thursday at the Arab Shooting Championships in Kuwait, but during the awards ceremony the public address system broadcast the spoof anthem from the 2006 movie "Borat," which offended many Kazakhs by portraying the country as backwards and degenerate.
Foreign ministry spokesman Ilyas Omarov told the ITAR-Tass news agency the incident "is, of course, a scandal and demands a thorough investigation, which we intend to conduct."
ITAR-Tass reported shooting team member Oksana Stavitskaya as saying that Asian Shooting Federation President Sheikh Salman al-Sabah had apologized to the team.

Santorum looks to Louisiana to revive campaign
US Republicans on Saturday hold a primary in the southern state of Louisiana, where underdog Rick Santorum is hoping for a big win over frontrunner Mitt Romney.
But even an expected knock-out performance here for Santorum will not make much of a dent in Romney's commanding lead in all-important delegates.
Romney has now won 21 out of 33 nomination contests, while former Pennsylvania senator Santorum has notched up 10 wins -- largely with the help of evangelical Christians and the party's most conservative members.
Pressure is increasing for Republicans to rally behind Romney to end the bloody and divisive primary battle before it hurts the party's chances of defeating Obama and winning the White House.
On Friday, the party found unity in raining criticism upon Obama on the second anniversary of his landmark health care reform.
But comments by Santorum pushed that off the news cycle.
He told supporters "we might as well stay with what we have" if the best the Republican Party can do is nominate someone "who's just going to be a little different than the person in there."
Romney immediately pounced on the remark, expressing disappoinment Santorum would "rather have Barack Obama as president than a Republican.
"This election is more important than any one person," he added.
While Romney focused his campaign appearances on attacking so-called Obamacare as an "unfolding disaster for the American economy," his surrogates were deployed to pound Santorum.
"Senator Santorum is going off the rails," Ted Kanavas, a former state senator and chair of Romney's Wisconsin campaign, said in a statement.
Jim Roddey, a party county chair from Santorum's home state of Pennsylvania, disparaged the candidate's "arrogant remarks," as "the most inappropriate comments made by any Republican candidate for president in recent history."
Such "outbursts" will only weaken the party in an election where turnout will be crucial, said conservative blogger John Hayward.
"It is absolutely unacceptable for the Number Two candidate to tell his supporters they might as well stay home if the other guy wins the nomination," he wrote on the Human Events news website.
Santorum had a 14-point lead over Romney in Louisiana in a survey released by Public Policy Polling, thanks in part to conservatives abandoning former House speaker Newt Gingrich.
But the victory could be one of Santorum's last as the race heads to states where Romney has the advantage.
The former Massachusetts governor was ahead by 13 points in a Rasmussen survey of voters in the midwestern state of Wisconsin, which heads to the polls on April 3 along with Maryland and the US capital Washington.
Santorum is expected to carry his home state of Pennsylvania in the following contest on April 24.
But that victory would be overshadowed if Romney managed to sweep New York, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island, in votes the same day.
Santorum's campaign said earlier this week it was looking ahead to May, when the southern states of North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, Arkansas and Texas vote.
It has also vowed to take the fight all the way to the Republican convention in August if Romney is not able to win the 1,144 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.
But if enough of the party's "super delegates" throw their weight behind Romney, the race could effectively be over long before then.
Romney currently has an estimated 560 delegates, while Santorum has won 246, according to the website Real Clear Politics.

Sometimes called B2B PR is 100 per cent different to the sort of PR you hear about with celebrities, paparazzi and champagne. It?s even legal, decent and truthful! There?s a total culture difference and thankfully, editors of trade magazines are not out to sell copies based on sensationalism ? they?re in the business of providing high quality, relevant information to their readers about their market sector. Your market sector.
In fact, because most trade journals actually have a staff of only one and bit (the editor and a part time advertising sales rep), they are almost totally dependent on material submitted by companies. Analyse the journals in the sector (remember that many are online magazines these days) and understand what the editors want.
Brainstorm the subjects on which your company has something to say and then speak to the relevant editors.
Write and distribute press releases on any real news stories you have ? but don?t send rubbish. This way, editors will come to know that your releases will be worth reading and they won?t get binned along with the hundreds of dreadful non-stories they receive every week.
Keep a steady flow of material heading towards the editors. Properly done, you should be able to feature in the key titles 10 months out of 12 ? maybe even 12/12!
Use a cutting service to make sure you pick up on all the coverage you obtain. And don?t just file it; you can reprint into a direct mail, put it on your website or hand out items, which makes excellent and authoritative ammunition for the sales force.
If you don?t want to do all of this yourself, then consider using a PR agency but only one that specialises in your sector. Ask one of the Editors for his/her recommendation.
Cost Effective B2B advertising is far from cheap with a typical colour page costing from ?1700 to ?2500 plus the cost of producing the advert. To be effective, it needs to be regular and in several magazines. Budgets need to be in the hundreds of thousands to be effective. B2B PR on the other hand can start from ?zero if you do it yourself and as little as ?15k a year using an agency. You can achieve editorial coverage valued at many times what you spend.

Currently, the average age of cars and light trucks in the U.S. is 10.8 years. The average age of cars and light trucks in the U.S. back in 1996 was 8.4 years, according to?R.L. Polk & Co.?That is an increase of over 28%. Why does it matter that the average car on the road is so much older than it was 15 years ago? As the economy recovers and American consumers are starting to?spend again, it stands to reason that vehicle purchases, especially if the average age of a car on the road is 10.8 years, could be on the rise.
Looking at new vehicle sales data found on?motorintelligence.com, it is pretty clear that vehicle sales are indeed on the rise. Total car sales for February 2012 were up 23.9% versus February 2011. Light truck sales were up 7.6% year-over-year this past February and SUV sales were up 11.8% in the same time frame. These increased auto sales seem to have contributed to a good start to the year for auto manufacturers. How can investors benefit from these increased auto sales?
From an investment standpoint it may seem pretty simple ? buy Ford Motor Company?(NYSE:F)?or General Motors?(NYSE:GM)?or Toyota Motor Corporation?(NYSE:TM)?and hopefully participate in the increasingly robust returns of the automotive industry. X-raying Dangers of Prostate Cancer | The News Nigeria

ILORIN: The revelation that not less than 2,000 men die of prostate cancer yearly in Nigeria was startling. Perhaps more disturbing was the revelation by Dr. Ademola Popoola, a consultant urologist with the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery, University of Ilorin, that while the death rate of prostate cancer has shown a steady decline across the globe in recent years, the reverse is the case in Nigeria and other sub-African countries; more deaths continue to occur as a result of the increasing rate of the disease.

Popoola was speaking two weeks ago on Prostate Cancer: Awareness, prevention and Screening, as part of the third edition of Health Education Seminar of the University of Ilorin, organised by the institution?s Board of Health in conjunction with the Faculty of Clinical Services.
While stating that men of any age are prone to the disease, Popoola disclosed that it is found most often in those over the age of 50, and more than 80 per cent of men with prostate cancer are over the age of 65. The disease remains a puzzle because, according to Popoola, no one knows its causes while doctors often cannot explain why one man develops it and another does not. Noting that prostate cancer is not contagious, he identified its symptoms as the urgency to urinate, difficulty in starting or stopping the urine flow, inability to urinate, weak, decreased or interrupted urine stream, burning or pain during urination and blood in the urine among others.
To the consultant, there is no proven prostate cancer prevention strategy. But the risk can be reduced by making healthy choices such as exercising and eating a healthy diet. In this regard, he advised on the choice of a low fat diet, eating more fat from plants than from animals, increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables taken each day and reducing the amount of dairy products taken each day.
Speaking on the topic, Cervical Cancer: An Overview, Professor Abdulgafar Jimoh, a consultant gynaecologist, disclosed that cervical cancer is the commonest genital cancer in women in Nigeria, particularly in the northern part, while it is second to breast cancer in the South.
He said: ?Cervical cancer is an important and leading cause of death in women aged 45-65 years in Nigeria while 60-75 per cent of women who develop cervical cancer live in rural areas.?
Jimoh expressed disappointment that the disease is yet to be recognised as a public health problem, particularly by government, despite the deaths caused by it. Though the disease is preventable, he regretted that it is not yet a preventable disease in the country, making women to experience undignified and extremely painful deaths that often go unnoticed except by those closest to them.
To another consultant gynaecologist, Dr. Rakia Saidu, vaccination plus screening is the most potent approach to reducing the incidence of cervical cancer. Those at the risk of having it, she said, are women who initiate sex early, have multiple sexual partners and do not have screening tests or fail to follow up with testing or treatment after an abnormal Pap test.
Focusing on breast cancer, a consultant surgeon, Dr. G.A Rahman, who noted that breast cancer is the second leading cause of death and the most common cancer, said its incidence increases with age and all women are at risk. Some of the warning signs and symptoms of the disease, she said, include painless lump or thickening, nipple pain and breast skin irritation. ?Breast cancer is extremely rare before 20, relatively uncommon before 30 while the incidence rises rapidly with age till about 50 and less so after that,? she said.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, had pointed out that scientific studies had shown that many cancers can be cured if detected early, admonishing the participants to take full advantage of the lectures to enjoy better health. Oloyede was represented by the Dean of Clinical Sciences, Professor Wahab Johnson.

It?s is a symbol of what barbecue food is all about ? home-cooked, wholesome, juicy, and loaded with bold flavor. When it comes to steak, a frying pan or indoor electric grill never comes close to the authenticity of barbecue. It is perhaps the ultimate pairing of a food and a cooking process that result in something entirely unique. And the best thing is, you don?t have to be a trained chef to the grill restaurant-quality steak in your own backyard. You do however, have to be willing to put in the effort to building up your own skills while buying quality cuts of meat. Let?s take a look at some secrets for getting the best barbecue steak the next time you fire up your grill.
Your Cut of Meat
It?s really a simple matter of science here. Different cuts of meat have different fat compositions and they will be more tender or tougher depending on where they come from. You don?t necessarily have to go with the most expensive either since something like filet Mignon might not be the best fit for a more old-school meal. Porterhouse is always a great choice, or a cheaper alternative is a classic T-bone steak. Strip steaks work well too if you want something leaner without being super tender. A good all-around choice would be top sirloin which mixes flavor with affordability.
Salt or No Salt
There is a bit of debate in the barbecue community over whether to salt beforehand or not. You can do a bit of your own research to see what your favorite chefs say. But whether you do it an hour beforehand or right before your steak hits the grill, no one will deny that you have to put salt on your steak for basic flavor. Pepper too!
Room Temperature
Don?t take your steak from the fridge and put it right on your grill. This can serve as a shock to the meat that results in a less tender product. Let your meat reach room temperature first and you?ll have a much easier transition towards a well-cooked scrumptious steak.
Gas or Charcoal
This is a matter of personal choice and what you already own in your backyard. Traditionalists will claim that charcoal BBQs (like these ones) are the only way to barbecue high-quality cut of meat. It?s hard to argue this fact, but it?s obviously not as convenient. So if all you have is a gas grill, you can still get a nice charbroiled effect, especially if you happen to have a Weber model with a sear station.
Cook it Right
You might be dealing with high temperatures and flames dancing all around your grill. But the process of cooking shouldn?t be hectic or fast-paced. In fact, all you have to do is let your steak sit on the grill until that first side is done. You can rotate it once if you like to get those signature barbecue marks that everyone loved so much. But after that first side is nicely seared, all you have to do is flip it over again to let the process finished. And that?s it, don?t start moving it around or pressing down with a spatula to speed up the process. And no matter what, don?t cut into it beforehand to see if it?s ready-to-eat. All the juices will spill out into your grill, and you?ll be left with a dry piece of overcooked leather.
Let it Rest
Barbecue is truly an exercise in patience because you?re not allowed to eat just yet. Let your steak sit and rest comfortably so that the internal juices can redistribute. This will ensure that you get a fully juicy steak, and don?t worry it?s not going to get cold.
