Several specific regions of our brains are activated in a two-part process when we are exposed to deceptive advertising, according to new research conducted by a North Carolina State University professor. The work opens the door to further research that could help us understand how brain injury and aging may affect our susceptibility to fraud or misleading marketing.
The study utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to capture images of the brain while study participants were shown a series of print advertisements. The fMRI images allowed researchers to determine how consumers' brains respond to potentially deceptive advertising. "We did not instruct participants to evaluate the ads. We wanted to mimic the passive exposure to advertising that we all experience every day," says Dr. Stacy Wood, Langdon Distinguished Professor of Marketing at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the research.
Participants were exposed to three pre-tested advertisements that were deemed "highly believable," "moderately deceptive" or "highly deceptive." The ads were also pre-tested to ensure that they were for products that consumers found equally interesting and desirable leaving the degree of deception as the only significant variable.
"We found that people have a two-stage process they go through when confronted with moderately or highly deceptive ads," Wood says.
During the first stage, researchers saw increased activity in the precuneus a part of the brain associated with focusing conscious attention. "We found that the more deceptive an advertisement is, the more you are drawn to it," Wood says, "much as our attention is drawn to potential threats in our environment." Specifically, in this study, the more deceptive an ad was, the more precuneus activity was observed.
During the second stage, researchers saw more activity in the superior temporal sulcus (STS) and tempero-parietal junction (TPJ) regions of the brain. This suggests increased "theory-of-mind" (ToM) reasoning. ToM is a type of processing that allows us to distinguish our wants and needs from those of others, particularly as this applies to intuiting the intentions of other people. In this case, it appears to indicate that participants were trying to determine the truth behind the claims in the potentially deceptive advertisements.
"What's interesting here is that the moderately deceptive ads cause more activity during this second stage," Wood says. That may be because highly deceptive ads are screened out more quickly and discarded as not meriting further attention.
Overall, when looking at both stages of brain response, researchers found there was greater brain activation when participants were exposed to moderately deceptive ads. But, if moderately deceptive ads stimulate more brain activity, does that make us more susceptible to the sales pitch in ads that trigger just a pinch of skepticism?
Apparently not. In a follow-up, behavioral component of the study, researchers interfered with the ToM stage, making it more difficult for participants to determine the intention behind the ads. As a result, participants more frequently believed moderately deceptive advertising. This suggests that the second stage is an important step that helps protect consumers by allowing them to better discriminate and screen out deceptive ads.
"Now that we've identified these stages of brain response, it may help future researchers identify underlying neural reasons why some populations are more prone to fall prey to deceptive ads," Wood says. "For example, if these regions of the brain are likely to be affected by aging, it may explain why older adults are more vulnerable to fraud or deceptive advertising. Or how might concussive brain injuries, such as those seen in some sports, affect our long-term discrimination in making good consumer choices?"

Opponents have vowed to bring the measure to referendum in November. They will need to gather at least 55,726 valid signatures of Maryland voters to put it on the ballot and can begin collecting names now that the bill has passed both chambers, the Associated Press reports.
Recent polls have shown that Marylanders are evenly split on the issue, the Sun reported.
Last week, the Washington governor signed a gay marriage bill into law. That law could also be challenged in a November referendum if opponents gather enough signatures.
Also last week, the New Jersey legislature approved a same-sex marriage bill, but Gov. Chris Christie vetoed the measure.

Family Organization ? Wilke Family
When Mallory started kindergarten I didn?t realize how much it would change our home life. I figured it would be mostly like preschool, but going more days. Boy, was I wrong. The influx of papers, the homework to do, her schedule and the tasks to keep up with and remember. I felt like I was just barely keeping up with it all, and not going a good job at that.
At the start of this year I knew I needed to do something about it. I needed a way to organize the girls incoming and outgoing items and to create storage for many items to save my sanity.
These are my solutions.
In the hallway by our backdoor, I created a family command & communication center. I couldn?t find a complete solution from any one store, so this is a conglomerate that works really well for us.
The left section is Mallory?s (the kindergartener), the middle is Chelsea?s (preschool) and the right is Tessa (starts preschool in the fall).
I knew I wanted an IN and OUT box for each girl, so?I got the Daily System Letter Bins in white (which is really off white and what I wanted) from Pottery Barn. The girls put their school papers, folder and books in the IN (bottom) bin when they get home from school. Once we do homework, read the book, do what needs to be done with the paperwork, it goes in the OUT (top) bin. This has made getting out the door in the morning so much easier.
Below the bins, I added hooks where backpacks and jackets get hung up (and they do!).
Above the Letter Bins, I made a cork board for each girl. Pottery Barn has cork boards with their Daily System but they are much too small for what I wanted. I knew I wanted space where three vertical letter size pieces of paper would fit. I couldn?t find anything like to buy (which I would have preferred), so I had to make this with 12?x12? (1/2?) cork tiles (purchased here). From the little research I did on cork tiles, I discovered that you can?t just stick them to the wall if you want them to stay long term. So, I got some hardboard/masonite pieces cut to 12?x36? from Home Depot and then used Gorilla Glue to adhere the tiles to the board. I then used anchors, screws and washers to attach my cork boards ?to the wall.
On the cork boards, I use the top 12? square to display current artwork. In the bottom two 12? squares, I tack up important papers that I may need to reference later (schedules, reading logs, reminders, etc.). I was having a hard time keeping up with those papers for the first part of the year and now I know where to post and find important information. Oh, and Tessa?s cork board (right) has miscellaneous artwork and papers tacked to it, just for fun.
I also got some wooden letters to add above each cork board, but I need to paint them before hanging them.
The next thing I wanted to do was create and post a schedule for our family. I thought this might help get us organized and stay on track with certain tasks. I got some ?chalkboard? contact paper and adhered it to the cabinet that surrounds our fridge. On the top I posted our schedule, using a chalk marker. On the bottom, I made a chore chart. The schedule is very ambitious and we haven?t followed it completely on any one day yet. It helps me by reminding me what needs to be done each day. It has really helped me in the mornings and we are getting to school five to ten minutes earlier than we used to.
As for the chore chart? it is a bit of a chore to keep up with it. I think if I followed through with it more, the girls would really get into it and do the things I?ve asked of them. But, most days we are too busy or I am tired or my patience has worn thin, so the things don?t get done or they get done and not marked off.
I didn?t photograph this, but I also added a little square of chalkboard contact paper to the front of the fridge (I did this after I took these pictures). On that ?chalkboard? I post some of my goals for the week and month. This has been a big help for me and I?ve already accomplished several items on my TO DO list (items that normally would just sit and sit on my list).
I also want to add that I really like the chalk markers. From what I understand, you shouldn?t use them on a traditional chalkboard because it should be used on nonporous surfaces (like the contact paper, mirrors, glass, etc.). The markers wipe mostly off with water and then with a little 409 or Windex, the rest of the paint comes off completely.
The third aspect of our get organized plan involved creating a homework station. In our kitchen, we have this cabinet (pictured above, on the left) where we used to store the girls? crayons, markers, coloring books, stickers, craft supplies, etc. (behind the doors). This solution wasn?t working for me anymore because it was too hard for the girls to get what they wanted without creating a mess and then it was always a struggle to get them to put everything away.
I found a better solution in the?Stanton 6+1 wide Rolling Cart??from Home Decorators Collection (on sale + free shipping). This is piece, on the right, is made with real wood, comes assembled and is nice quality. There are several different options for the cart (colors and number/configuration of drawers). It comes with wheels but we?re not using them.
On top of the rolling cart I added a quality?pencil sharpener (I didn?t realize it was so big when I ordered) and a wire basket. The wire basket holds papers that the girls are working on or have finished. I hope to go through the papers once a week or so to make sure there aren?t any keepers before throwing most away. In the drawers, are their supplies:
- Drawer 1: rulers, stapler, tape, glue sticks, erasers, hand pencil sharpener (for colored pencils since they can break the electric one)
- Drawer 2: colored pencils, crayons, specialty markers
- Drawer 3: small white boards, white board markers, white board eraser
- Drawer 4: white paper
- Drawer 5: construction paper
- Drawer 6: stickers sheets, sticker books
- Drawer 7: coloring books
I?m sure as the girls get older, the items in the cart will change, but this is what is there now. This little cart has been a great addition to our home. The girls can get things out and put them away so much easier.
In the bottom of the cabinet (on the left, above) where their supplies used to be stored, I am storing other art, craft and school supplies: Play-doh, paint, brushes, beads, pom-pons, stencils, educational workbooks, etc.. The supplies in the cabinet are used infrequently and with parental supervision, so the cabinet has more of chance to stay organized now.
The other thing that I added to the area (but didn?t photograph) is a black?Bedford Lazy Susan ?(pencil holder) from Pottery Barn. It sits in the middle of our kitchen table and holds the girls? pencils, markers, colored pencils for Tessa and sometimes scissors (if the girls aren?t on restriction from them; they currently are because they create the biggest messes after using scissors and they don?t like to clean up the paper scraps. No clean up? No scissors.). When we eat dinner, the Lazy Susan sits atop the Stanton Cart in the wire basket.
So, my attempt at getting us organized is helping me; some solutions more than others. I just wanted to share in case anyone else out there is looking for a way to calm the chaos in their homes.

Mitt touts Olympics, resume (Politico)
SALT LAKE CITY ? Mitt Romney took a brief respite from regular campaign events to commemorate the 2002 Olympic games here, paying tribute to a part of his biography that is central to his presidential bid.
?The games were a showcase for the great qualities of the human spirit: we saw in the athletes the determination, courage, teamwork, character, faith,? he told former Salt Lake Olympic Committee members at a reception here Saturday evening. ?What I didn?t realize at the time we made that decision was it was not just the athletes who would show determination and courage, loyalty and faith and patriotism, it would also be the people in this room.?

The Republican?s remarks came during the first of two events held on Saturday to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the winter Olympic games here. Romney also attended a tribute event later Saturday night, where he was introduced by ice-skater Kristi Yamaguchi and received a standing ovation.
The visit by the Republican presidential candidate ? who served as president and CEO of the 2002 Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic games ? wasn?t overtly political. Utah, with its June 26 contest, is the last state to vote in the GOP primary, and its heavily Mormon population make it a near certainty that Romney will win here.
But in another way, today?s anniversary events are just as significant for Romney?s campaign ? the former venture capitalist?s success in managing the 2002 Olympics is central to his campaign?s core message and his strengths as a candidate, and his appearance at the commemoration highlights him paying homage to that record.
On the trail, Romney frequently invokes his experience heading the Olympic effort in stump speeches.
Romney became head of the Olympic games in early 1999, after financial scandal threatened to hurt the games? credibility, and has been widely credited with the event?s turnaround. The reversal of the games? fortunes fits neatly into his campaign resume as a successful businessman and turnaround artist who, if installed in the White House, will, he argues, reverse what he says is the country?s decline.
On the night he won the Florida primary last month, Romney told the crowd that his ?leadership helped save the Olympics from scandal and give our American athletes the chance to make us all proud.?
And with the rise of Rick Santorum, Romney?s past as a successful manager ? of the Olympics, Bain Capital and the state of Massachusetts ? has become an even more central point of contrast between Romney and his competition.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A smiling former Goldman Sachs computer programmer was freed from prison Friday after a surprise ruling from a federal appeals court reversed his conviction on charges he stole computer code.
"Justice occasionally works," declared the beaming Russian-born programmer, Sergey Aleynikov.
He said he "just jumped all over the place" at 6 a.m., the moment he read and repeatedly reread an email from his lawyer informing him that the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan had reversed his conviction. The words were, he said, "'We won!'"
The reversal came less than a day after defense lawyer Kevin Marino told a three-judge panel that Aleynikov was wrongly convicted. The 42-year-old man had already served a year of a more-than-eight-year prison sentence after a jury convicted him in December 2010 of stealing trade secrets and transporting stolen property in interstate and foreign commerce.
Aleynikov said outside court that he looked forward to seeing his family, including his 8-, 6- and 3-year-old daughters.
"This is such big news to me that I don't have time to think about what will happen tomorrow," said Aleynikov, dressed in a gray sweat suit and white sneakers. "Today, it's a victory."
His lawyer said: "I've never felt better in my life."
The highly unusual immediate dismissal of a conviction by the appeals court came in a case that tested the boundaries of what can be considered a crime as companies seek to protect their intellectual property from competitors.
Aleynikov has been in prison since he was sentenced in March. A three-judge appeals panel heard arguments Thursday, but the judges gave no indication they would reverse the lower court hours later with a terse, one-paragraph order. The 2nd Circuit said it would issue a written ruling "in due course" to explain its decision.
Marino said Aleynikov's immediate reaction when he spoke to him early Friday was: "There is justice in the world."
"It's justice because Sergey Aleynikov did not commit either of the crimes with which he was charged," Marino said. "The government's attempt to stretch this criminal federal statute beyond all recognition resulted in a grave injustice that put Sergey Aleynikov in prison for a year."
In oral arguments before the 2nd Circuit, Marino called it "ridiculous" and "preposterous" that his client was facing eight years in prison because he was found to have information that was not a product that Goldman Sachs sold in interstate and foreign commerce. A prosecutor had asked the court to uphold the conviction, saying protection of trade secrets was the only way companies could retain their technological advantages.
Prosecutors declined to comment Friday, though they agreed during a court appearance that Aleynikov could be released on his own recognizance without conditions while everyone awaited the full appeals court opinion, which was unlikely to be released for weeks.
Aleynikov, a naturalized U.S. citizen who emigrated from Russia in 1990, was first arrested in July 2009 as he returned from a trip to Chicago to the offices of his new employer, Teza Technologies LLC.
Prosecutors accused him of taking trade secrets from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in 2008 to help his new company gain an advantage with high-speed trading. He made $400,000 as a vice president at Goldman Sachs. His move to Teza enabled him to be paid $300,000 annually, with a $700,000 bonus in his first year and a revenue-sharing plan that would have added $150,000 annually.
During a two-week trial, Marino told jurors that his client was merely trying to copy parts of the company's software that were taken from public software codes. He acknowledged that Aleynikov had violated the company's confidentiality agreements but said that was a civil matter.
The trial brought into focus sophisticated computer programs that use mathematical formulas to execute scores of trades in short periods of time after evaluating moment-to-moment developments in the markets.
The government said Goldman Sachs makes millions of dollars a year in profits from high-frequency trading and carries a competitive advantage over rivals because of the speed of its computer programs.
At sentencing, Aleynikov said he very much regretted "the foolish decision to download information before I left Goldman Sachs," though he added that only some of the information he took was proprietary to the company.
He said he "never meant to cause Goldman any harm, and I haven't acted with malice to anyone at the bank."
After he was freed, Aleynikov said he did not know what he would do next, though he noted that he believed his skills were up to date. He said he did not have access to a computer in the prison but continued to write computer programs "in my head."

I would like to take this opportunity to express my opinion on a vital topic: the importance of making academic reflection a part of the collegiate extracurricular world. This sounds paradoxical perhaps, since the point of extracurricular activities is usually to allow students to engage with the community in a way that differs from academia. Often, the extracurricular part of college is a break from thinking and a chance at doing. Yet, I would like to insist that extracurricular activities have little value to students or their community if they are not an extension of the intellectual climate fostered by the academics of a university.
Many important movements started at universities and indeed would not have succeeded without them. What would May ?68 in France have been without the University of Paris at Nanterre or the Tiananmen Square protests without Peking University? Universities are places that exist for the creation and development of new thoughts. Action can be co-opted or inspired through effective communication, but thoughts cannot be born solely of action. Reformers and revolutionaries have always relied on a theoretical scaffolding to bolster their actions. There is no French Revolution without the Enlightenment and no women?s suffrage movement without feminism.
The Undergraduate Philosophy Council represents a vital collegiate tradition: the regular gathering of people from all academic backgrounds to discuss ideas and to develop critical thinking capacities. Currently there are philosophy, religion, anthropology, biology, political science, history and engineering students among us. Often, our talks go beyond the esoteric realm of metaphysics or phenomenology and we hold philosophically informed discussions about current events such as collateral damage in Iraq or issues surrounding SOPA. As one example of the initiatives we are taking, next week we will have the exciting and exclusive opportunity to meet and talk with Kwame Anthony Appiah, a distinguished visiting scholar in the humanities.
While we do not engage in traditional community service tasks such as teaching refugees or raising funds to feed hungry children, we believe that feeding heads is as important as feeding bodies. We have tried to provide our community with the kind of food for thought that usually does not make it to the dining halls. Fueled by the desire to understand the world in all of its complexities and to communicate those complexities to others, we provide students with the opportunity to organize their thinking about issues of pressing social and political importance. We?re in the business of thought experiments that can help lead us to enlightened action and a better understanding of fellow human beings.
As Plato describes in the famed allegory of the cavern, the first step to enlightenment is the rejection of the chains of ignorance followed by the arduous climb to the truth. It is the enlightened person?s duty to help others escape the bonds of deception by the path of education. For members of any community to lead more just and harmonious lives they must make critical thinking and informed discussion an educational priority.
