STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • China has imposed a five-year ban on the construction of new government buildings
  • State-owned pharmaceutical company has HQ that rivals Palace of Versailles
  • New directive part of Chinese government's pledge to curb official excesses
  • Corruptions and widening wealth gap is alienating much of the population

Hong Kong (CNN) -- Some state-run enterprises in China have opulent headquarters more suited to the court of Louis XIV of France, while other local government-owned buildings even replicate the home of the President of the United States.

Clearly, in recent decades, money has been no object in the world's second biggest economy.

But Beijing's bean counters, a more socially-aware bunch in recent times, have decided enough is enough and imposed a ban on the construction of new government buildings, according to state media.

A yawning gap between rich and poor and a social media-led backlash against corruption and official excesses, has made the ruling Communist Party led by President Xi Jinping all too aware of the perils of continuing down such a corrosive path.

Opinion: Corruption as China's top priority

And so the General Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council jointly issued a directive that calls for an across-the-board halt to the construction of new government buildings, training centers or hotels in the coming five years, the Xinhua news agency reported.

The directive accuses some departments and localities of breaking building regulations when approving, and calls on all CPC and government bodies to be "frugal and ensure that government funds and resources are spent on developing the economy and boosting the public's well-being," Xinhua said.

Expensive and unnecessary renovations will also be prohibited, with only projects that "erase safety risks" or "restore office functions," allowed.

In order to let the people live comfortably, the government has to tighten its belt and cut its own spending.
Professor Wang Yukai

Ominously, the directive says officials who approve banned projects should be "harshly punished."

Perhaps the best example of the type of extravagant constructions being targeted is in northeastern China, where the state-owned Harbin Pharmaceutical Group has its main offices. The remarkable complex is modeled on the Palace of Versailles outside Paris, France and features incredible ornate hallways with crystal chandeliers and gold paneling along the walls.

Since coming to power late last year, President Xi has made corruption and excess his chief targets.

In several speeches since he officially took over the reins of the Communist Party in November, he warned that corruption could lead to "the collapse of the Party and the downfall of the state."

He has repeatedly urged officials to "build a clean government, show self-discipline and restrain their relatives and associates."

According to Xinhua, the new building ban is an important part of "building a more transparent government and strengthening ties between the CPC and the public."

"In order to let the people live comfortably, the government has to tighten its belt and cut its own spending," said Professor Wang Yukai from the Chinese Academy of Governance, in quotes carried by Xinhua.

Even with the QTE's, I was impressed with the way the game looked and played, and now this news only makes the game even better! I'm really looking forward to Ryse, it seems like a fantastic launch title/exclusive!

Why show a brand new IP in "a simplified form" surely you'd want it to look as glorious as possible so people go WOW! I NEED THAT IN MY LIFE.

@11 probably, because it wasn't in a "simplified form" the developers just read a lot of the hate directed at the QTE's and decided to change it.

If it was in a "simplified form" surely they would have mentioned that during or shortly after the conference.

Could be decent and it looks stunning, but I can't shake the feeling this will be the first mediocre Xbox one game.

They ruined it with the E3 demo for me to 100%, I was so excited for that game...and then that video came up. They should have named it BAXY or ABYX.
A good game should go completely without QTEs, imo.
Just make a good combat system and dont give us pre-rendered fights.

I love the time period this is in, anything with Ancient Roman culture just pulls me in instantly.

Can't wait to get this and play it after watching the movie 300 and the new 300: Rise of an Empire which comes out next year.

This game will be ass. Why you ask? Because its from Crytek, they only make good looking games - the rest is generic bullshit.

...Maybe they surprise me and actually make a good game for once, but i wont hold my breath.

How can anyone believe that? The E3 demo ruined my want to buy this game. So now after hearing this news I will just rent this game. I have no idea how it will turn out now.

First it was a Kinect title, then it was what they showed at E3, now this. To much change for me to be excited about dropping $60 day one.

Sacha Baron Cohen exits Freddie Mercury role in Queen movie

By Jeff Sneider

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Sacha Baron Cohen has exited the role of flamboyant singer Freddie Mercury in a long-gestating Queen movie due to creative differences, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.

Sony and GK Films spent years developing the project, which had been courting Baron Cohen's "Les Miserable" filmmaker Tom Hooper to direct, though insiders say the surviving members of Queen refused to approve the choice.

Queen also was hoping for a more reverential depiction of the band and its late frontman rather than the warts-and-all portrayal Baron Cohen and writer Peter Morgan had planned for the iconic gay singer.

Graham King and Tim Headington are producing the film with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, as well as Queen Films.

King and Headington have overcome obstacles before, as Warner Bros. once put "Jersey Boys" into turnaround in 2012. Now, the movie is back on track with Clint Eastwood directing.

The producers will now have to find a new leading man in addition to a suitable director, though the project's loss of momentum has raised doubt as to whether the movie will ever get made under Queen's watchful eye.

Baron Cohen continues to focus on developing "The Lesbian" and an untitled spy comedy about James Bond's idiot brother under his Four By Two Films banner.

The news was first reported by Deadline.
