A month later she and senior ministers including the chancellor, home secretary, defence secretary and industry secretary agreed to the proposal.
Minutes from their meeting read: "It might be necessary at some stage to examine more radical options for extending endurance, including the use of servicemen to move pithead stocks to power stations by rail and road."
The previously secret documents show the meticulous preparations made by ministers and officials for what they saw as the inevitable confrontation with Mr Scargill and his National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) over pit closures.
Mrs Thatcher had been a minister in Edward Heath's government when it was brought to its knees by miners' strikes in the early 1970s, and early in her premiership she was forced to withdraw plans to shut 23 pits because the Government was not ready to withstand a prolonged strike.
At the start of 1983, ministers were told that power stations had enough stocks of coal to keep operating for about 20 weeks, but MISC 57 warned that much of industry had as little as two weeks worth of coal left.
To improve Britain?s readiness for a mass walkout by miners, power stations were converted to dual-firing so they could run on oil and nearby land was quietly bought up so more coal could be stockpiled.
Nigel Lawson, then the energy secretary, wrote a memo for Mrs Thatcher in January 1983 setting out a detailed strategy for how to defeat the NUM.
He said the miners had shown a ?reluctance? to take industrial action but noted that Mr Scargill was ?by no means a spent force? and would do ?everything he can to foment and escalate disputes?.
Mr Lawson recommended that the Government should press ahead with mass pit closures, accepting the ?near certainty? of a national strike once the NUM realised what was happening, but only after the planned general election that year.
By March 1983, John Vereker, a member of Mrs Thatcher's policy unit who also served on MISC 57, was confident that Britain could cope if the miners halted coal production.
"I am happy to report that this morning we for the first time glimpsed on the horizon the prospect of indefinite endurance, albeit at a very considerable cost for converting the main coal-fired power stations to dual firing," he wrote.
"There is some way to go, but it looks as if we can achieve nine months of endurance at very little cost on top of what we have already incurred: and twelve months' endurance at an additional cost of ?70 million for further coal stocking capacity."

Last month, researchers at Georgia Tech unveiled a clever hack. Using a tiny Linux computer disguised as a USB charger, they could penetrate any iPhone or iPad's defenses and reportedly install malware in less than a minute. Thankfully, that attack vector will soon be far easier to combat: Apple has added a new prompt that warns users and asks them for permission in the latest beta of iOS 7.

Ars Technica originally spotted the new prompt, which you can see below, and Reuters confirmed with Apple that the issue had been addressed. "We would like to thank the researchers for their valuable input," said Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr. Until iOS 7 arrives, we suppose you'll need to manually make sure your charger is yours. Afterwards, if you see this message pop up when you plug into what appears to be a simple wall wart, perhaps you should find another power source.

On Monday, British GQ published some salacious-ish teasers from its cover story on One Direction, in which the boys affably discuss groupies and bat away softly floated questions about their sexuality.
What happened next is the stuff of mindless thinkpieces about the efficiency and sometimes inaccurate nature of social media: Hundreds, if not handfuls of thousands of 1D fans (also known as Directioners) seized upon American GQ editors, tweeting their disappointment, and, more often, rage at the magazine for daring to hint at the 1D dudes' proclivity for women.
Many of those tweets landed in the mentions of Nate Erickson, GQ's social media editor. On Tuesday, Erickson retweeted an endless stream of vitriolic threats and attacks by Directioners (check out his twitter feed -- @Nately -- for a rundown). As editors who have had our own experiences with certain fan-bases (though they've been more of the Madonna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce variety), our hearts went out to Erickson and his GQ compatriots. We asked how he's doing.

And then there were three. What you see above is the Moto X along with its SIM tray and a matching nano-SIM. According to GSM Insider, this picture (which we've enhanced) recently popped up in Hong Kong. We've checked the left side of Motorola's upcoming flagship in other leaked images, and the dimensions of the SIM tray opening appear to be correct. A such, the Moto X is poised to follow the iPhone 5 and PadFone Infinity as the third-ever handset to adopt the nano-SIM (4FF) standard. It's unclear why the company chose the new SIM form factor (the phone isn't particularly small), but we'll be sure to ask at Thursday's launch event.
