Why Daniel Craig is the real "girl" in "Dragon Tattoo" (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - What happened to 007?

In "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," the swaggering, lady-killing Daniel Craig is practically a damsel in distress.

As investigative reporter Mikael Blomkvist, Craig leaves the gun-slinging and bare-knuckle beating to his sleuthing partner, Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara).

In a pivotal scene, it is Craig who is tied up by a serial killer. The film implies that he would join a long list of victims were it not for a golf club wielded by Salander. Throughout the ordeal, he barely puts up a fight.

It's left to Salander to ask as the villain escapes from his torture chamber, "May I kill him?"

Over the course of the nearly three-hour mystery, Salander will also beat up a hapless mugger and exact gruesome revenge on a rapist.

In contrast, Craig's Blomkvist is shot at, nearly vomits at the sight of a mutilated pet, and never lifts anything more dangerous than a pen -- which in David Fincher's adaptation of Stieg Larsson's crime novel is a lot less mighty than the sword or even Salander's cursor.

In a refreshing change of pace, Craig's female cohort is physically and mentally superior. Too often, it seems, mainstream movies force actresses to twiddle their thumbs until their male costars can save or seduce them.

Not this time.

As David Denby notes in his New Yorker review of the film, "In this movie, is modest, quiet, even rather recessive. It's Mara's shot at stardom, and he lets her have it."

It's as if he's playing, in sexist movie terms, "the girl." The frequently shirtless Craig almost seems to be doing penance for all of his chasing after women as James Bond. This time, the British actor allows himself to be the object of desire.

In a twist that would be unimaginable for say, Sean Connery, Craig lets Mara drive the love train when it comes to their between-the-sheets encounters.

It's she who seduces him, while he raises a few mild objections about his age and the impact a hook up might have on their working relationship.

That differs from Larsson's portrayal of Blomkvist. In the book, the journalist is much more sexually promiscuous. Although the movie retains Blomkvist's affair with his editor Erika Berger (Robin Wright), it jettisons his other sexual liaisons.

That was a deliberate choice, screenwriter Steven Zaillian said in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"I'm a fan of the book -- I like it very much -- but when I was reading it at a certain point I thought, am I reading 'Shampoo?'" Zaillian told the magazine. "Is this Warren Beatty or is this Mikael Blomkvist? I didn't drop those things in order to make him more sympathetic. It was really just that they were unnecessary to the story."

Carnal relations aside, Craig does piece together some important clues early in the mystery, but his investigation is more or less at a dead-end until he enlists the computer hacking, motorcycle straddling Salander. In short order, Salander is able to link a series of apparently disconnected murders with a few clicks of the cursor and a couple of visits to Swedish police stations.

In one scene, a kindly police officer asks Salander if she's had anything to eat before she looks at photos of a savage murder scene. He's concerned, he says, that she might be sick.

As Mara's butt-kicking Salander demonstrates throughout the Nordic thriller, there's no reason to worry.

Craig's Blomkvist, on the other hand, better look at those pictures on an empty stomach.

CyanogenMod 7 nightly builds now available for SE Xperia Active, Xperia Pro and LG Thrill

Android Central

Following a slew of other phones late last week, the CyanogenMod team has just added nightly build support for three new devices -- Sony Ericsson's Xperia Pro and Xperia Active, as well the LG Thrill 4G -- AT&T's version of the Optimus 3D. Nightly builds of the popular custom ROM are built every day by the team's army of robots, giving advanced users the change to try out the very latest untested versions, bugs and all. They're also an important milestone towards a device being fully supported by CM.

Also worth noting is the fact that these nightlies are based on the current CyanogenMod 7 release, rather than the upcoming CyanogenMod 9, so if you're after ICS on these devices, then you'll have to wait a little while longer. We've got individual device links after the jump, or alternatively you can hit the source link to see all CM7 nightly builds.

Red's Scarlet-X 4K camera gets video review: you've never needed $11,700 so badly

Native 4K recording? Check. A built-for-war body? You bet. Backordered despite a downright shocking $11,700 price tag? Most certainly. As with Red's prior products, the Scarlet-X seems to be wowing just about every shooter lucky enough to come into contact with one. Luck for you, the folks over at Cinema5D have spent an inordinate of amount of time with this beast in order to deliver the full skinny on whether it's worth the price (and wait). We won't bother spoiling any conclusions for you, but if you've been toying with the idea of blowing your (and your SO's) bonus on one of these in a bid to start your own movie house, there's a vid just after the break that deserves your attention.

More small firms expect to buy workers new iPads, tablets in 2012

Just when Apple may be poised to unveil a sparkling upgrade to its iPad, many small firms of fewer than 1,000 are looking to buy new tablets for workers. Demand for tablets is up,?a new survey finds.

Here's good news for workers at smaller companies: More bosses are thinking about buying employees a new iPad just as Apple is rumored to be unveiling a new, higher-resolution version of the popular tablet.

That is according to a new survey of small businesses ? those with fewer than 1,000 employees ? by NPD Group, a business research firm. Some 73 percent of the small firms surveyed say they plan to purchase tablets over the next 12 months ? up 5 percentage points from NPD?s previous quarterly survey. Nine in 10 firms surveyed say they will maintain or increase their previous spending on tablets.

When small businesses are making plans to purchase tablets, the iPad is the most frequently considered brand, Stepehn Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD, said in a statement. ?The iPad, just as it is in the consumer market, is synonymous for ?tablet? in the business market,? he said.

The small business urge to buy iPads comes as Apple is rumored to be about to roll out two new models of the popular device. For example, the website DigiTimes predicts that two new versions of the iPad will be released in January. Other reports place the release later in the first quarter of 2012. Apple does not comment on future products. But the rumor mill expects the new tablets to have a more powerful processor, a higher-resolution screen, and a more capable camera. ?

Whatever the precise nature of the next iPad, the NPD survey found that the bigger the firm, the greater the likelihood it plans to buy employees an iPad or other tablet over the next 12 months. At firms with fewer than 50 employees, 54 percent had plans to buy workers iPads. At companies with 501 to 999 employees, nearly 90 percent of those surveyed said they intended to buy tablets in 2012.

Although more small companies plan to buy workers tablet computers in 2012, not every employee will get one, of course. At the smallest firms ? those with fewer than 50 employees ? the average company planned to spend just $1,912 on tablets, the NPD survey found. With iPads ranging in price from $499 to $829 depending on configuration, only a handful of workers will have the latest electronic toy courtesy of their employer. At companies with up to 999 workers, the average planned expenditure on tablets is $38,749. NPD did not release the number of survey respondents, and its data were collected in September, the firm said.

?Businesses of all sizes appear to be determined to capitalize on the tablet phenomenon,? NPD vice president Baker said in his statement.

A separate study of larger companies released in May by Model Metrics showed iPads gaining traction at larger enterprises. That study found 72 percent of firms had iPads in use, even though many of the companies had not formally deployed the tablets through their IT departments. In April, when the survey data were collected, only 22 percent of the survey respondents had formally deployed iPads, but 78 percent planned to do so by the end of 2013. ?

Tablets made by electronics companies other than Apple figured in corporate plans. But the iPad is the most likely brand to be adopted, the Model Metrics study found,?with 83 percent of companies that plan to deploy tablets citing that brand. The next most common brand is the BlackBerry PlayBook, cited by 19 percent of companies that plan to deploy tablets.?

Writing the Wrongs: PLO Plans to 'Disengage' From Israel

Gavriel Queenann

Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) officials said Friday their decision to return to 'popular resistance' is aimed at 'disengaging' from Israel.

PLO Executive Committee member Tayseer Khalid said the new unified Fatah-Hamas strategy will be based on 'popular resistance' which will spread into PA enclaves in Judea and Samaria.

"The popular resistance will reshape the Palestinian relationship with Israel... to reach total disengagement with Israel," Khalid said.

"We will never accept to be an agent for the Israeli occupation," he added.

Khalid's statements are only the latest in the intransigent unilateralist mantra coming out of Ramallah and have led analysts to suggest that Fatah has decided to turn the PA enclaves in Judea and Samaria into a second Gaza. Last week PLO officials officially adopted a strategy based on "continuous efforts along with the international community to secure full recognition and full United Nations membership, pursuing internal reconciliation, and keeping up the popular resistance."

They have also threatened to end economic and security ties with Israel.

Israeli officials have said the unilateral track adopted by their counterparts in Ramallah are a direct violation of the bilateral 1993 Oslo Accords - and warn unilateral moves on final status issues by PA officials will result in Israel making unilateral moves of its own.

It remains unclear what PA officials believe is to be gained by cutting all ties with Israel and returning to an all-or-nothing unilateral path.

PA security officials expressed concern earlier this year that a direct confrontation with Israel could have disasterous consequences, while Ramallah's senior economic advisers have warned discontinued Israeli participation in the PA economy would lead to fiscal insolvency.

A recent and short-lived decision to halt tax revenue transfers to the PA by Jerusalem sent Ramallah into a fiscal tail spin.

In addition, Israeli leaders have made it clear that attempts to realize territorial claims by force would result in Israel moving to secure its own communities in Judea and Samaria and could trigger Israel's annexing areas it prefers to retain in future negotiations.

Israel provides all critical infrastructure to Ramallah's enclaves, including electricity, water, telecommunications, and Internet.

Nonetheless, PA officials seem bent on confronting Israel while fomenting 'popular resistance.' While ostensibly non-violent, the so-called ?popular resistance? resulted in two violent Intifadas which and were accompanied by a spike in terror attacks that resulted in thousands of Israelis being killed.

Regional observers note Article 9 of the PLO charter continues to assert, "Armed struggle is the only way to liberate Palestine. This it is the overall strategy, not merely a tactical phase.?

It also maintains ?Palestine? is defined by the British Mandate and is ?indivisible? ? thus leaving no room for Israel to exist at all.

With Israeli military leaders saying Israel can "not escape" a major operation in Hamas-run Gaza saying such a move is fast becoming "essential" ? some observers say the PLO is making a dramatic strategic blunder.
